I've been very happy with it so far.
I was really torn between buying this one or the least expensive excalibur. The difference is the looks, this one has stainless steel racks (the other has plastic) and this one has a timer, the other one doesn't. In the end, I went with this one because of the stainless steel racks and also because of the looks. I'm new to dehydrating so this wasn't an easy choice.. I just wasn't sure which way to go. I've never had an excalibur, so I really can't compare the end results, but so far, I've been very happy with the magic mill.. It's easy to use, it circulates the air well since the fan is in the back of the unit. I like that I can see in without opening the door. It's relatively quiet, by that I mean we can hear it running, but it's not annoying. I've dried tomatoes, bananas, apple rings, hash browns, all kinds of veggies, strawberries, pineapple, mushrooms, green peppers....I've got quite a stash of dried foods now and I plan on using it quite a bit once the garden is ready to harvest. I think dehydrated food makes perfect sense. It's so much easier to deal with than canning.. I've been keeping the dried food in canning jars and sealing them shut with my food sealer, which has an attachment for canning jars. I've found that the timing to dry things just depends on the product itself. The temp is a bit odd on this machine. It has preset temps so you can't set it at exactly the temp you might want, but it comes with a manual telling you what temp selections to use for different kinds of food. I purchased a cookbook for dehydrating, and the author uses the excalibur, so she states temps based on that machine for drying various foods. I was following her suggestions at first and noticed it took the food a lot longer to dehydrate than it should have. So I started using the Magic Mills suggestions for the various temps and have had much better results. Some reviewers said they have a strong plastic smell, but I didn't find that to be true with mine. The instructions tell you to wash down the walls/door as well as wash all the racks before first using it, so that's what I did. Maybe that's why I didn't have that plastic smell.. The food has turned out great. My husband especially loves the dried bananas and apples. I think it'll be great to have all kinds of dried veggies to use next winter rather than buy things in the store that come from who knows where. Also, we have decided it's not a bad idea to start prepping, just to be prepared in case of an emergency. In the end, I am glad I purchased this one rather than the excalibur. This one is much more attractive, I prefer the stainless steel racks and so far it's done what it's suppose to do. Another plus is most of the foods make the house smell really good while they're drying. A few things are a bit pungent, but for the most part, it makes your house smell like you've been cooking or baking all day.

food dehydrator - Magic Mill is magic
love this: easy to use, just the right size (small), is surprisingly quiet, works well, has good instructions, easy to clean; mostly use for a wide variety of fruit and some veggies, but it also makes great meat jerky

Economy priced, QUIET dehydrator
I purchased this unit because I was replacing an old Ronco one from 25 years ago that was a stackable style with the heating elements on the bottom. I chose the Magic Mill because of its metal trays and rear-mounted heating element and fan. So many dehydrator units are stackable and the top trays take forever to dry unless you keep rearranging trays which causes food to fall off, plus the dehydrator should be one of those things you shouldn't have to babysit real closely. With this Magic Mill unit, the heat and fan are located in the back which evenly dry all of the trays at once. This is the best feature in my opinion, because I can be confident that all trays get equal drying without me having to juggle. Plus, I can dehydrate taller items (i.e, tomato halves) and just remove shelves to accommodate them, which you can't do in a stackable unit. Note that the door lifts up and completely off the unit. This allows for easy tray placement and removal. It comes with silicone hot mitts for tray removal but really unless you take the trays out during the dehydrating process you really don't need them because the trays and unit cools off pretty quicky when it's shut off. I love the digital function of choosing temperature and time. However, I set my timer past the recommended drying times for my vegetables because I dont want it to prematurely stop. The instruction manual indicates the top drying time for this unit is 20 hours, so if you need to dry beyond that, you should shut it off and give it a break before starting it back up again. A note about the reviewers' comments that this unit is loud: I have found just the opposite to be true. Most people would use a food dehydrator in the kitchen area which is a pretty centralized, busy area of the home. I can hear the fan but it is quieter than the sound of my refrigerator running, and honestly, the white noise blends into the background. So unless these reviewers are dehydrating in the middle of the night on their bedside tables, I can't really imagine what their complaints are about. [No, I am not at all hard of hearing.]

It appears to be a nicely built unit.
Easy to operate. Packaged nicely and seems to be pretty well put together. I like the cookbook that comes with it makes it really easy. It runs pretty quiet and right now Iโm making my first batch of dried apples.

Easy to use, but limited control over temperature.
We've had this dehydrator for almost 3 years. It's been trouble-free, and it couldn't be any simpler to use. 7 fairly good sized racks will handle nearly 5 pounds of beef for jerky. My only criticism, and it's a minor one, is that the temp controls only cycle through 9* intervals: 95, 104, 113, 122, 131, 140, 149, 158, 167. In my old dehydrator, I'd start a batch of jerky at 160 for about a half hour, then reduce to 135. With this one, I have to use the nearest setting available, and maybe it doesn't make any real difference, but I'd have preferred 5* increments, or, better yet, the ability to go up or down one degree at a time from the preset temps. Other than that little complaint, I have to say, the dehydrator is rugged and dependable. It gets a fair amount of use in our house, jerky, drying herbs and peppers from the garden, and so on. Definitely worth the money.

Huge Improvement over round dehydrator
I have had this dehydrator for 2 months now and have run at least 2 dozen cycles. I had a round stackable dehydrator that served me well, but I now do more than it can handle. The round shape is not really conducive for dehydrating as it wastes a lot of space and for fruit leathers make them an odd shape for storage. The rectangular shape on this dehydrator is able to fit a lot more stuff. I have made apple chips, dried sweet potatoes and beets, fruit leathers, and beef jerky. It has all come out great. Had to do some trial and error on the temperature and times due to the larger batches, but I have now used it for a couple months and have dialed in the times and temperatures for most of the normal stuff I dehydrate. I love the timer function. My last dehydrator was just plugged in so you had to be around at the end of the drying time to unplug it to stop or risk over drying stuff. Now I can start something at night and have it end on its own in the middle of the night and then unpack it in the morning. So much better. The metal trays have worked great and are easy to clean. They seem to be well constructed (ie I haven't seen any broken welds). I run them through the dishwasher to clean them. No rusting or coatings. Apple chips pop right off whole with no problem. I did some strawberries that stuck pretty good, but I think the problem was I did them too thin and they all broke off in pieces than coming off whole. Will eventually try again next year during strawberry season. Beef jerky (marinated sliced steak type) comes right off, no sticking at all. I bought some fine mesh plastic trays to use just in case, but haven't needed to use them yet. The dehydrator dries things pretty evenly regardless of where it is in the machine. I have loaded all 7 trays with apple slices and as long as they are all the same thickness (definitely need a mandolin slicer) they dry evenly regardless if they are in the front, back, top, or bottom. I have not needed to rotate a tray for any of the stuff I have done.

Accurate temps
Bought specifically for chilies. Works great! Dried them in the garage, due to very hot peppers dehydrated. Didnโt use temps given in pamphlet. Used info online according to how peppers were cut. Kept fruit rollup sheet on bottom to catch loose seeds.

Magic Mill Dehydrator - Simply Magic
Well, I am fairly new to this concept of creating dehydrated food but I definitely did my homework. I evaluated many different machines and specifically looked at the features that were important to more seasoned veterans. The features that seem be discussed the most are flimsy plastic trays and doors that break quickly AND the sound level. Since I live in a small space (combined Living/Dining/Kitchen), the sound level was going to be the most important factor. After using this machine for a couple of batches of beef jerky, dried fruit etc, I am ecstatic with my purchase. This machine sits about 7 feet from where I watch TV and I can barely hear it. Very, very quiet, sturdy SS trays, sturdy see through plastic door, very easy to clean, very easy to use...โฆ. works flawlessly.....so far! I would definitely recommend this product.... A1 rating. Waste of money, try another brand
I would like to given this a MINUS 10. Whilst it was working it was great. It has died after 2 1/2 years, which works out about ยฃ150 a year! I have contacted the company however no response. I need to try and find a way to obtain a refund as 2 1/2 years is NOT reasonable AND try and find an appliance which will be value for money and work long term! Amazon should also be able to help if the appliance has not had a decent life span. After ignoring my emails via amazon, I contacted them directly and asked how the life span of their dehydrators should be. They agreed more than 2 years. I stated how long this had worked for, and they said we only give a years warranty and to take that into consideration when buying. ...and dismissed the cost of this for years working. I will never recommend nor buy any of their products again. I suggest anyone looking to purchase any of their products work out, the cost via warranty. Would you be happy to replace the product after that time frame, due to what was paid for?
