Can these be used to test hypochlorous acid amounts?

This strip is designed to test for free chlorine, so it will detect and measure both hypochlorite and hypochlorous forms of chlorine.

Question 2

A hypochlorous acid machine co. says their disinfection testing was done at 50ppm. Surprised to see such a high range on these strips. Explain?

Accepted Answer

Chlorine can be used to disinfect and sanitize things for many different applications and uses. Therefore, what works for one application or regulatory requirement does not work for all of them. As a result, we make many different kinds of chlorine tests for different applications. This test specifically was designed more for testing care facilities sanitizers and disinfectants (although it has other uses). It has an indicator at 25, 50, and 200 ppm so it would work for you but you may want to check out ' B07TBGQCBC ' as I believe that would be better suited for your testing needs. Is 1 min. enough for an accurate hoci measurement? my machine's rated > 1000ppm but results @ 500 after 1min. but within 15 min strip is 2000 ppm why?

Yes, one minute is the time you are supposed to wait for an accurate reading. To get an accurate reading you must:

Dip the Active Chlorine test strip into solution for 1 second.
Remove strip and shake off excess water.
After 1 minute, compare pad against color chart.

The way pretty much all test strips work is  through chemical reactions. So when you dip a test strip into a solution it will react if the chemical the strip is designed for is present. This reaction will occur on the test pad indefinitely, which is why pretty much every test strip will continue changing colors even after the time instructions say to get a reading. We design our test strips with this in mind which is why we calibrate all of our color charts to our instructions (and the timing).

In your specific case, your machine is producing a solution at 500 ppm and not producing to the rated capacity. This could be as a result of not using enough solute or could be as a result of a defect. Since we do not produce or have expertise troubleshooting hocl production machines we would recommend contacting the manufacturer as they may be able to help you further.

What would the 2000 ppm be indicated for? i need to determine the concentration needed to disinfect (my highly exposed covid-19) 3m respirator.

So, this strip is designed to test the acceptable range of chlorine for sanitizing or disinfecting non-porous surfaces in line with most US regulations for care facilities. Typically 500-800 ppm chlorine is the recommended range to disinfect a surface after it has already been cleaned in line with best practices.
