It's very hard, the 1st time. I have rubbery mesh "jar opening helpers," which I use to open bottles & jars. I use them, the 1st time I open it; or, I have some young person passing through the house do it! After the 1st time, I don't seal it tightly. Hope this helps!

If you need to use them for your application I would say 7 cans would be plenty. You do not need very much for the votives...

Can I use this to securely fit my taper candle with a 1/2 inch base into a 3/4 inch candleholder?

It would certainly help, but it wouldn't give you lateral support. You may want to "stuff" something around the base of the candle to fill up the space on the sides.

Accidentally bought formal candles instead of pillar. Would this keep the candle from tipping?

By 'formal' do you mean taper candles? We have used this product for years to keep taper candles straight in candle sticks. It will help anchor your taper candles if you were to stand them in an inch or two of glass stones or pebbles, but upright alone isn't attractive because you have to use so much.
