IYKYK! Love this mackerel, it's become a staple in our pantry. Olive oil does not overpower and drains easily. Can eat straight from the can, a great topping for tacos or add to curries, stir fries, etc. YUM.

I love mackerel and have been getting more into tinned fish. Mackerel can be difficult to find, but this is a great tasting and cheap way to satisfy any cravings. King Oscar makes a great product for an affordable price. They have wonderful curated flavors too. I love the accessibility to the product in stores and online for easy restocking. Will definitely try more of their products in the future.

Why you should consider my review: 1) Tested multiple cans: I compared not just one can like on some online videos, but ate through a 12 pack and alternated with another popular brand over a month. 2) Motivation: I am not a paid influencer and I am only bothered to write maybe one review every 3-5 years. I disagreed with the high rating and rave reviews some were giving this product. 3) Review the product not the fish: This is about this item, not the health benefits of mackerel that some of these reviews are raving about. Pros: *Value: If other brands are 90% fish and 10% oil, King Oscar feels like 95% fish to 5% oil. The fish is PACKED in this can. Comes out in one dense mass. *Taste: The flavor was ok---not as great for a from-the-can fish, but in a dish or mixed with Japanese mayo and/or citrus can be ok. Try a can first before you splurge on the 12 pack. I'm ok with fishy fish, but some cans were extremely fishy. It may not be everyone's cup of tea. Cons: *Most of the cans carried a distinctly fishy smell on opening. I eat sushi & sashimi, but the odor is pretty strong. *Some may like the density---value!---but the texture can then be very tight if you want to eat it right out of the can. *Texture: It's not flakey fish at all the way they prepare it vs other canned mackerel. *Taste: taste is related to smell in large part, so while the individual bites were fine to tasty, if you got a fishy can, that plus the texture made some cans a slog to get through. Recommended use: Because of the odor and density, it might be best if you're going to put this in a recipe with other items. If you're ok with fishy smell, you could eat it out of the can (I did). My background with canned fish and canned mackerel: I didn't grow up on canned fish. I'd have canned tuna maybe once every 4-5 years. In the last year, I started looking into making lunches that were (a) cheap, (b) quick, (c) packed with protein, and (d) packed with nutrient. I started with more canned tuna and salmon, then moved into mackerel. I now pretty much only eat canned mackerel now when i go for a quick lunch for omega 3's and low mercury risk. I started buying in bulk, and ended up with 2 12 packs of mackerel and some single packs of other varieties. Why I tried this product: The high ratings from others.

Yesterday was my first time trying mackerel of any kind...Absolutely delicious! I'm a sardines girl and I liked these better than the sardines I've been eating. Definitely ordering another 12pk of these, and including the Mediterranean, and Lemon flavors NEXT! 😍 I eat them straight out of the can, and drink the oil. Every time I eat these and sardines, my brain feels SO much better. These have also been great for my glucose/insulin levels. Lovely amount of protein and fat. The can is easy to open, and there isn't a strong, fishy smell after you've opened the can (which can be the case with sardines). I only wish the can (and serving size) were bigger for the price. I can get a 12pk of sardines for half the price I paid for the 12pk of mackerel, but the taste more than makes up for it. 5/5!

Delicious. I've never been a fan of canned fish (tuna being about the only exception) but recently I went on a health kick and tried these. Not sure what fishy nutrients my body has been lacking, but I practically got addicted to this mackerel goodness! :D No bones, no icky other stuff.
