It can but I would use Fliptoggle anchors or some good Dry wall anchors to be safe.

How far apart are the mounting holes?

Well between bad eyes and crooked screws I’ll give it my best. With the u-hook in the vertical position the holes center x center across top or bottom are 13/16” apart and in the horizontal position they are 1-1/16” across top and bottom. Remember bad eyes!!
