What Your Second Grader Needs to Know (Revised and Updated): Fundamentals of a Good Second-Grade Education

This is the perfect companion to any homeschool curriculum. It’s based around core knowledge and it’s absolutely a joy to read and incorporate into your second graders education. Even if you don’t homeschool, this is great for parents who want to understand what their elementary children should know!! A great tool for parents and teachers alike! Also, I purchased a gently used copy and it came absolutely pristine! 10/10

I liked the contents of the book

These are excellent books to use as general guides when checking for holes in homeschooling curriculums. Each grade gives you a Classical model overview of what to cover. We are on our second set of children and still find them to be a fantastic resource. Core Knowledge has put a lot of research into choosing what is presented inthese guides. Highly recommend!

This is a wonderful and informative book for curious kids. Note that the reading level isn't necessarily at par with children who have finished 1st grade. Your child has to be able to read small chapter books to have the reading level to get through some parts this book. However, if you are willing to read it to your child, there is a ton of art/history, poetry, and science in here. We particularly love the funny poems, and it has got my child interested in reading and enunciating poems properly. I don't use the math section because we do math on our own, but we will continue to use this book through the second grade school year, just for the amount and variety of knowledge it provides.

This book was helpful as a beginning guideline to help me make a curriculum but I ended up not using it as a textbook because it was superficial. I had to search elsewhere for ways to help explain math. And this book has nothing about how to teach spelling and reading. It did however make some really good points about the necessity of teaching facts. Everyone needs a good knowledge base in order to develop judgment and common sense.
