One way or another, leaders emerge in the life of every church. Most pastors want to be intentional about developing and shaping those leaders themselves, but they rarely have the time and resources to do it. So leaders spring up, often without deep roots in the gospel, and they struggle to guide the church towards proper Christian ideologies. The biblical task of leading a church requires more than good management principles or sound theology. If the gospel truly is the power of God for salvation (Romans 1:16) and is constantly bearing fruit and growing within us (Colossians 1:6), then each elder must be strong in the gospel. That's the vision and the goal behind Gospel Eldership . Gospel Eldership combines theological training with spiritual formation in order to shape future (and current) Christian church leaders at the heart level. It walks future leaders through the biblical concept of servant leadership and the primacy of character before looking at the specific duties of church elders. Gospel Eldership helps develop men who know their own heart idolatry and how the good news of the gospel applies to it and who have a sense of gospel fluency so that they can swiftly, effectively, and clearly apply the gospel to others. Gospel Eldership is designed to intentionally raise up the type of men who can and should lead God's church. Gospel Eldership treats the role of elder carefully and biblically and is written from a theologically complementarian viewpoint. With practical exercises to help put Christian concepts to work in real-life situations, Gospel Eldership can be used in one-on-one discipleship or in a small group setting and is appropriate for use in any Christian church from the smallest church plant to the largest church-planting church. Solid, clear, easy to use coaching resource for current and potential elders
I use this for our Elder in Training process at my church. This is a one year mentoring program where current elders mentor and develop potential candidates for the church in the upcoming year. The conversations give great insight on the readiness of the candidates, but also provide great opportunity for mentoring and discipleship. It is also good for the current elders to refresh and reflect on their own leadership. Grateful for this book!

A good, light book for introspection and group discussion
Our elder team has enjoyed working through this book at a slow pace (one chapter per month). It does not require serious study, yet provides plenty of material for introspection and group discussion about the various facets of eldership.

Excellent tool for helping people discern a readiness to become an Elder.
Just finished skimming Thune's new book on Eldership. This is a great, short book that could be extremely helpful to pastor training up Elders. I'm seriously considering altering the training I've developed at our church to include Thune's book early in two year process. In the past, I've made Alexander Strauch's book "Biblical Eldership" a prerequisite reading which then led into face to face meetings and if a person was found ready to pursue Eldership, they were welcomed into a two-year collective for training. I'm thinking of swapping out an individual reading of Strauch for a group study using Thune. The benefit here would be a greater chance to see character displayed in community. Out of that group, I could invite men to pursue Eldership. Still thinking here. But this book is great. Thune is an A29 guy (as am I) so we live on the same page on most areas. What I particularly love about this book is the depth of the questions that Thune has crafted for us. I found myself continually saying "Oh that's really good. I need to be asking our potential Elders that question". Thanks for writing Bob!

Insightful and Practical
Robert Thune sets out the "how to" for those serious about applying biblical eldership in the church. This is a guide to apply the Word of God regarding elders in the local church. Dr. Dave Beckwith
