Sorry, don't recall. I gave it as a gift but I think it might be 1.5" (I measured one of mine).

Which is stronger? Install to studs or install using secure mount anchors?

Mounting to a stud (if we are talking about a sturdy wood stud) is always the best choice. However I ran into an issue with the studs not lining up where I needed them placed, so the secure mount anchors were used and the result was quite satisfactory. Once attached you should be able to tell, quite easily, if you feel secure about the finished mounting.

How do you mount safety bar into tile wall?

Hi MT jem, The important feature of a safety bar, or grab bar, is that it is secure. Don't mount it to drywall, or tile stuck to drywall or hardboard. The grab bar must be secured to wooden (or metal) studs in the wall. First, you must determine the exact position of your grab bar. If, by chance, there are wooden studs behind your exact positions at each end, then you lucked out. You use stud sensors to find the location of your studs. But usually, you don't luck out. After you have accessed the location of the studs behind the tile, and determined your exact position of the grab bar, you drill one hole at each end that matches your garb bar, through the tile with a tile drill bit. (The last step, after you secure the grab bar to the wall, is to drill the other holes.) You go in through the other side of the wall where you see the holes. You can buy long drill bits for this purpose. You carefully remove the drywall so you can glue the two pieces of drywall back with wood glue. A multitool with a drywall blade is desirable for this procedure. Then you install 2x4 or 2x6 or 4x4 wooden blocks between the studs. Studs are usually spaced 16 inches apart. This way you don't alter the tile work, or the wall that you can see. It is best to fit the wooden blocks precisely, then you can use Atomic Epoxy Glue. This epoxy is amazingly strong, which is the point of a grab bar. So, after your blocks are precisely shaped so that they slide snuggly between the studs, you “butter” the studs in the area that you clearly marked, with the epoxy glue, and the ends of your block. Do one at a time. Epoxy is messy and gets on everything that is touches. Move slowly and carefully so you don’t get it on anything but the studs and block. After the epoxy hardens, the blocks are attached to the studs more securely than if you used screws. Nails aren’t as strong as screws. If you use screws, then pre-drill holes that are the diameter of the screw shaft. You do not want to split the blocks and weaken the connection.
