We had been unable to use the patio surrounding our home because of bird droppings which we only discovered shortly after moving in. The prior owners must have washed down the decking every time they were going to show the house. Yuckola. We still take our shoes off after coming in the house just in case. We were feeling a bit desperate; the gorgeous trees add a lot of privacy which we are loathe to give up. This machine seems to have worked on the doves as well as the large black birds (crows?) we had been getting. We have this mounted to the eaves of our house which puts the machine at about level with the lower third of the canopy of our very large fig trees. Per the owner reply to our question that positioning should work as the machine covers a 70 degree arc up and down (presumably a 140 degree arc total). We turned the dial to the right just short of where birds/skunks transitions into cats/dogs and it does seem to be working. It's been 72 hours thus far and no more bird droppings. We had been really frustrated and skeptical after we tried the reflective strips and other visual cues to scare birds away because they only seemed to work for a week or two. We've had this up for 72 hours so far and as of this morning, we are giving it 5 stars for being incredibly effective. Will update in a few weeks with additional results. ================= UPDATE 1: First week of use: This machine continues to be effective and humane; and it has made us much happier with this home we recently purchased last fall. We still see birds flit by and maybe even come down to grab twigs for nest building but there are NO MORE huge piles of messy droppings littering the deck every morning. We still get hummingbirds for the flowers, but again, no nesting. All we see now is leaves and twigs which are easy to sweep off and much much much cleaner. This machine is perfect for what we need. We've kept it on the same continuous and ultrasonic only setting just short of where birds/skunks transitions into cats/dogs and the audible noise volume is turned down to zero. We thought we would have to work our way down the spectrum every 3 or 4 days until we found the right setting for the local birds here, but it looks like we got incredibly lucky and hit the correct frequency on the first try. Will update periodically after several weeks and then several months of use with progress updates. If all goes well, we will be recommending this to friends who are getting bird strikes on their windows. Bottom line: Continues to be a 5-star solution. Confidently recommended for overnight bird roosting and nesting problems. ================= UPDATE 2: First month of use: Well, we've had some ups and downs. We decided to try changing the frequency to see if we could get an even broader effect so that pigeons would not even land anymore to get twigs as we were getting the occasional dropping on the deck just from that and it turned into a disaster. After just 24 hours of the changed frequency we started having problems again. Then we changed the frequency back, but it turns out that we had left it unplugged during the change back to the original and forgot to plug it back in. Our deck was a mess. The whole thing had to be hosed down again. And we washed off all our furniture, etc. That was horrible. After we plugged it back in, the droppings seemed to reduce by a lot - about 80% over night; and then completely stopped after about 48 hours. We cleaned everything yet one more time and fingers crossed we've been good ever since. And curiously enough, even the occasional landings seemed to have disappeared. Maybe its because when we made sure the frequency was set for the third time, we must have tweaked it just enough to be perfect. So that was overall a huge win. Now however, we have some new smaller bird that seems to be flitting around and nesting at the margins of our deck - or at least that's what we think from the teeny tiny pile of bird droppings. Still gross but a better problem as the sheer square footage involved is smaller and in an out of the way corner of the decking we can clean more easily. So after some discussion, we've decided to leave the first unit alone as it's working great. We had our first rainstorm and the box is mounted on the eaves where it still gets direct rain and run off from the roof as well and it's still working great. To figure out this other smaller problem, we're going to purchase a second unit and set it at a different frequency to see if that works. Hopefully the new ultrasonic frequency won't cancel out the old one. Will keep this posting updated. Bottom line: Continues to be a 5-star solution. Confidently recommended for overnight bird roosting and nesting problems for doves and large blackbirds and some other large bird of some kind. Purchasing a second unit to experiment with another frequency for smaller birds. ================= UPDATE 3: Full 90 days of use: Make sure all angles are covered! After some accidental re-alignment we figured out that the problem we had been having with smaller birds was due to occlusion and not the frequency; so all of the birds species - large and small - are driven away by the same frequency (continuous and ultrasonic only setting just short of where birds/skunks transitions into cats/dogs and the audible noise volume is turned down to zero). These units work on line of sight so obstructions near the unit can block the coverage area farther out and birds find these safe zones and roost there. We used the second unit then to generate a cross hatch coverage perpendicular to the first unit at the same frequency. The area we are trying to keep clear is about 50 ft deep x 80 ft wide, surrounded by trees about 30 - 40 feet tall. Both units are mounted about 10 feet off of the ground pointing straight out. One unit is mounted at the center of the 80ft wide section. The other is mounted at about 10 feet in from the corner along the 50ft deep section. For us the results were immediate. The resulting invisible cross-hatch of ultrasonic sound is incredibly effective; overnight the deck was completely clear for the first time ever. We are extremely happy to have a droppings-free deck to enjoy year round. This product has made our yard usable.

I thought I had already posted a review and I was just going to update it. Seems I didn't. So here is the scoop. In my case I guess it is impossible to prove it doesn't work. We just moved to this area and have a very nice 3 seater covered porch swing. Where we used to live there were squirrels, but they never cared about the swing cushion. Two days after setting it up in our new home a squirrel, or more, decided to chew a hole in the back of the cushion and pull out the fiber stuffing. My guess is to make a nest for the upcoming winter. Anyway, I put the cushion in the garage, ordered the Yard Sentinel and when it arrived I immediately set it up and positioned it facing the swing from about 15 ft. away. No squirrels came around. The audible tone would go off several times a day and was so disturbing that I turned it off. Still no squirrels. Then I thought I should put the cushion back on the swing to tempt the critters. Still no squirrels. Maybe they finished with their nest building. Maybe the device works. Whatever, there are no more squirrels and we are happy. Will let you know if anything changes. 9/22/14 Last week I noticed that the squirrel was back and seemingly immune to the Sentinel. I changed the position of the machine, the setting level, the motion control to continuous and placed it back outside. The next day I watched the squirrel climb up on the swing cushion and rip it open. I ran out and chased him away. I tried to modify the setting on the Sentinel, again, but this morning the squirrel just walked across the front of the machine and was unaffected by it. I decided to return the unit to Amazon but was informed that my "window" of opportunity had expired last week. I am now stuck with a device that does not perform as advertised. DO NOT WASTE YOUR MONEY!!!! This machine does not work, at least not for squirrels. I am very unhappy with Amazon.

I took 1 star off for the Cons. I had reordered a 2nd unit because I thought the first was defective for it's issues. It turns out 2nd unit has exact issues the 1st one did, so I guess it's normal then? Cons: The back cover (like other reviewers have stated, is ridiculous to get on and off. Good luck if you have Arthritis). It also makes an unpleasant/uneasy electrical popping noise once in awhile, I guess it's normal. Also cannot get the strobe light to turn off, even did what instructions said. So i put tape over strobe light. Pros: It seems to work on these Feral/Tomcats!! I have it plugged into an outlet on our outside porch. I left setting on continues. Every night and day we had up to 6 to 7 different cats coming onto our porch and couple certain ones would spray. Some times 2 at a time would show up. I watched all this on our porch Camera and nothing else worked I tried until I got this unit!! Glad I did, its been 5 nights and 4 days so far with 0 Cats! To other reviewers...if it's not working try the different frequency dial. I tested it on our house cat first (sorry Kitty, but she was fine no harm done lol) just so I could see which frequency was going to be the "sweet spot" then I set it outside.

20 Feb 2016 update: Returned 1st defective one under Amazon's 30 day return policy and bought a 2nd one. Upgraded rating from 1 to 3 stars because the 2nd one is still working after 10 months of intermittent use (intermittent because I power it with an 18 V rechargeable NiCd battery that only lasts about 2 days, and don't always connect a fresh battery when it runs out). My teenagers confirm that the ultrasound still works. I can't say for sure how well it repels animals, but I haven't had a problem with neighbourhood dogs pooping near the end of my driveway -- I think they walk on the opposite side of the street, which should be far enough to keep the unit from turning on. Original March 2015 review: The manufacturer has some serious quality control problems, specifically "infant mortality" (premature failure of product). When I got this I tried it inside the house: the audible alarm was very loud on maximum, and my teenage son could easily hear and was greatly annoyed by the ultrasound. I installed it outside in motion detector mode (as opposed to continuous mode) to keep neighbourhood dogs off my yard and rigged up a battery to power it. I left the audible volume on low so initially I could hear it. The motion detector worked well judging by the red light that came on when activated by motion 30-40' away. The battery I used needed replacing every couple days. After 6 days of use my wife saw a dog in the yard undeterred by the Yard Sentinel. The battery had been in a couple days so first I thought it had lost power. I replaced the battery and the red light of the motion detector again lit up indicating detection. As days went on I became suspicious because I couldn't ever hear the audible alarm I had left on low. Finally I took it inside and tested it with my son, and there was no ultrasound, nor was there any more than an extremely faint audible alarm when I turned the volume up to maximum. The parts that might actually chase away animals had failed in about a week, but the red light still lit. I returned it to Amazon for a refund since it was less than 30 days old. If you have one of these and you think it's working because you see the red light, it might actually be broken and you should return it before the manufacturer warranty expires. You need to find someone who can hear the high frequency sounds (ultrasound) and ask them to check it. A second best test would be to remove the back cover and turn the audible volume up and see if you can hear that, but it might be possible that audible works when ultrasound doesn't.

Hello all, I read many reviews about the Yard Sentinel and their excellent Customer Support before deciding to buy one, but before I did, I called with a few questions and spoke to Tech Support. The gentleman was very courteous, and answered all of my questions. The dogs that I am trying to stop from barking are behind the back wall of a large building in my neighbors back yard, so the Motion Sensor was not going to help me, but I knew that the Yard Sentinel had a 110dB Ultrasonic Blaster that could be set for dogs, so I ordered the model that comes with a Remote Control. This is the same unit that has received so many wonderful reviews by Amazon customers, only this model includes a Remote Control too, so I knew it would be just as effective for me, with an added convenience. I have a small hand-held unit made for Training Dogs, with a Yes and No signal, which I have been using on these dogs (the No signal), and they can hear that one through the wall, so I know they'll hear the Yard Sentinel, which is much louder. I mounted the Yard Sentinel around my Back Door, which is only about 10 feet away from the back wall of the building that the dogs stay behind, with the unit facing that wall directly, and the unit is pretty much out of the weather. I added an electrical outlet to an existing outside light fixture by my back door in a weather-proof housing, so the Power Adapter is near the Yard Sentinel, and is protected from bad weather. For anyone who doesn't know, the Yard Sentinel comes with an AC Power Adapter, or you can run it on 4 C-Cell Batteries. I set the Ultrasonic Volume all the way up, and I turned the Sonic (Audible) Alarm all the way down. So now I can now be in my Home Office, Living Room, Kitchen, or on the Front Porch, and fire off the unit whenever these horribly rowdy dogs start acting up, going on and on for 15 and 20 minutes at a time. I just got it mounted today (March 5th, 2012) and I tried it out shortly after I finished, because the dogs were going nuts with me in the yard behind them as I mounted it - they could hear the leaves crunching when I walked, and that was enough to set them off. I know that it might take a week or two of working with them, because they have been left unattended the majority of the time to do as they wish, and when the owners are home at night, they will let the dogs go on for 15 or 20 minutes before they come out and yell at them to Shut Up, so the dogs (6 of them, including 2 Big Nasty Rottweilers) pretty much do as they wish all the time, and they love to bark and raise H311 at every little noise, all hours of the day and night. Believe it or not, if I rattle a pot in my Kitchen sink while I'm washing dishes, they start up, so I am going to have this Remote Control with me all the time. The dogs are extremely hard-headed, but I think it's starting to work already. After I get these dogs trained, I'm going to move the unit to the front of my house, where birds tend to gather in a very large Magnolia tree and mess all over my car. That's another reason I picked this unit, because it's effective on a wide range of creatures. That and the rave reviews about the Customer Support. Since I appear to be the first to Review this model (at the time of writing), for those who don't know how the Remote works, there are 4 buttons on it. There's a Standby button, which will set to the whole unit into Standby (or set it Active again), so you don't have to unplug it or remove the batteries for times like when you're having a backyard party and you don't want to keep unplugging it or removing the batteries. There's an Ultrasonic button, which sets the Ultrasonic Blaster In and Out of Standby. There's a Strobe button, that sets the Strobe Light In and Out of Standby, and here's a Red "Turbo" button, which will set off all of the units features for 30 seconds, and then the unit resets itself. This Turbo button sets off the Audible Sonic Alarm (which has a Volume Control on the back of the unit), the Strobe Light (which flashes 6 times in 30 seconds), and the Ultrasonic Sound (which has a Volume Control and wide range setting for all kinds of pests), all for 30 seconds, even if they have been set to Standby using the Remote's other buttons. This "Turbo" button is the button that I am using to sound the Ultrasonic Blaster from inside my Home or Front Porch (quite a distance away), and it works great. I highly recommend this unit!!! A couple of years ago I purchased the 'sound only' device from this company and was disappointed. But Now, this unit looks a lot like my other model but it works for me. You have three things to scare the animals, strange changing sound that YOU and your neighbors can hear, but you can turn down the volume on the audible sound (even to off). The Ultrasonic sound which was like the old unit is over 100 Db and the frequency is adjustable. Lastly, it has a motion triggered flashing strobe. They look like LEDs but are quite bright. A sensitivity control is for the range of detection. At the lowest setting it still works for a rear deck and will trigger on a mouse. The triggered mode runs for 20 seconds which seems to be enough and it will keep triggering as long as there is motion. It has a very wide side range and picks up critters BEYOND my deck as soon as they enter the yard and start the strobe flashing and ultrasonic blasting. I don't use the audio because of close neighbors but I could use it on low if I have to. There is a bad design feature with the 'remote control'. One button is pressed to turn it off and the 'same button' is pressed to turn it on. I would prefer two buttons to do this because of the distance I use it. If you're in the house you can get mixed up if on or off. When the remote is pressed a short tone means 'on' and a longer tone means 'off'. There are also buttons for just strobe for 20 seconds and another for just sound and finally a PANIC button that is used if a BEAR is coming after you..... right.... The remote 'key fob' is powerful enough (small 12v batt) to go through two walls to reach the outside. I use it from my easy chair because I have a speaker there. I have a night vision camera and can see and hear what is going on... A raccoon has approached the deck several times, triggered the unit and left, also in opossum. The remote is NOT needed and the main unit is ready to go as soon as power is supplied or turned on. When triggered a red light comes on at the motion detector that you can see. I don't know what, but something in this unit is causing great distress in my 'city varmints' and they turn around and leave and I have tried LED red lights, chemical spray, horse pee, you name it.. Don't use horse pee, it stinks to high heaven. The only 'slight con' is the light trigger (always on, night time, daylight only). I use 'on at night' but the light sensor is not adjustable and while it comes on fine, at early morning is still on and triggered by my birds for another half hour until it's bright enough to switch off and doesn't bug my song birds. To get around the above I purchased a 2 pack of simple timers from Amazon and just set the time to switch on and off the unit. Works great. (NOTE to Amazon, add 'my purchases' as a choice to the "insert product link" there are too many timers ti find. I could not be more happy with this purchase! Two weeks and NO critters. It was 3 or 4 times a night!

I’ve been trying everything for years now to keep the birds out of my blueberries and the deer from destroying everything in my yard. There is not a spray, scent or decoy that I haven’t used. So I bit the bullet and bought 2 two packs to use in my yard. What I found was that they are easy to setup and seem to be pretty sensitive even at a lowest setting. What that means for you is that unless you’re using the plugin adapter, you’ll need stock in C-cell batteries. Last about three weeks max as the are constantly going off every time anything moves in the yard (leaves, you or anything else). I tried the settings with and without the added screech of a bird which I think would be better if it was a human voice or dog barking, but it was pretty annoying since it was constantly going off in 4 different areas of my yard all day and all night. So how did it work? Well if you consider that deer stood 10’ away from it while it was screeching, creating high pitched noises and a red light and the deer continued to eat my trees and plants. Didn’t bother them in the least. Birds, flew and ate berries on the bushes right in front of it as it was working. Needless to say, for me, they didn’t even bother the pest that I have. Very disappointed that I purchased these and wish that I’d saved my money, but getting really tired of the constant fight and destruction of my property. I live in the country, but near neighbors who feed and cherish the deer, so maybe the only thing left for me personally is the physical removal of the deer as they are nearly tame around here (until hunting season starts then they’re nocturnal), so if you are in the same situation as me, save your money as they are like everything else that just doesn’t work.

I am tired of dogs take a dump in my front yard, so I was going to set this up to keep them away. It says the unit works up to 170 feet away, and I believe them; however if you want to use the motion sensing part of it, then that range is cut down to about 30 feet as the unit will not turn on until I am that close flailing my arms. Here are some things that I think would be beneficial to prospective buyers. - The manual states that you should adjust the knob for frequency once in a while (not sure if this means once a week or once a month or once a year); but this is not a set up ad forget solution, you will need to fiddle with it. - While the unit itself may be weather proof, the outlet is not, its a standard 9v 750Mha adapter, it needs to be housed inside a weatherproof case if you want to plug it in outside. - The unit has a red light that turns on whenever the sound is on. - If its not a wild animal, it probably would need to be trained to be afraid of it (manual says this), because if the animal feels comfortable in a place it may not go away. - I personally can hear all ranges of Ultrasonic this unit produces (yes Ultrasonic not the sonic sounds those are really loud, which is the point). I could hear Ultrasonic up to about 10 feet away, and oh boy does it hurt my head, but being mounted outside this shouldnt be an issue. If you plan to use this indoors keep this in mind (not everyone can hear it, but a lot of people can). Hope this helps! I returned my unit because I needed to motion sensor cover 60 feet, but sensor wont turn on until 30 feet away; also the whole idea of adjusting frequencies, and a blaring red light on the front probably wouldnt work for people walking their dogs and taking a crap on my lawn.
