THE JURA EDITION with new introduction by Alex Massie 'For him Jura was home' - Richard Blair on his father George Orwell 'The book of the twentieth century . . . haunts us with an ever-darker relevanceโ โ Ben Pimlott, Independent 'The greatest British novel to have been written since the warโ โ Time Out 'His final masterpiece . . . enthralling and indispensable for understanding modern history' โ New York Review of Books The year is 1984 and war and revolution have left the world unrecognisable. Great Britain, now known as Airstrip One, is ruled by the Party, led by Big Brother. Mass surveillance is everything and The Thought Police are employed to ensure that no individual thinking is allowed. Winston Smith works at The Ministry of Truth, carefully rewriting history, but he dreams of freedom and of rebellion. It is here that he meets and falls in love with Julia. They start a secret, forbidden affair - but nothing can be kept secret, and they are forced to face consequences more terrifying than either of them could have ever imagined. In this new edition of a modern classic, Alex Massie's introduction highlights the importance that Jura had on the writing of one of the twentieth century's most important works of fiction. A must read book
This book has been my first introduction to dystopian fiction and I really enjoyed it. It will provide much food for thought and still remains completely relevant in this day and age.

Hard Read
I understand why this is a popular book, but, I found it a hard read. Thereโs a very long chapter in it, that, to be honest, I virtually bypassed. Towards the end, you can understand the meaning of it, but, even then, it states something that will happen, that doesnโtโฆ.

More true than ever - 37 years after 1984
Readers of the novel prior to 1984 probably let out a sigh of relief when that year came and passed and George Orwell's dystopian world had failed to materialize. Of course, there were certain signs and worries - television consuming many hours of "free" time, wars "Oceania" carried out in Vietnam or by "Eurasia" in Afghanistan, in my own country Sweden a build-up of a nanny state for citizens outlawing alternatives for state television or state child care - but if anything people reacted to this in growing protest guiding the future in another direction. But Big Brother is cunning: Instead of appearing in the form of an omnipresent party, he now appears disguised as the ultimate freedom fighter - the Internet. The party is replaced by 4-5 dominant companies, and they eat inside people's minds just as effectively as the party's telescreens or terror threats. Reading it after witnessing the American insurrection of January 6 and the continuous peddling of lies about electoral fraud which, despite any factual evidence, is gaining traction and influence in is an amazing testimony of George Orwell's insight into the human mind - it's fallacies and ease of being impressed. His description of the use of war, and investment in weapons, as a way of oppressing people by shifting GNP into destructive powers is a masterpiece of its own. Highly recommended for anyone wondering where the age of Internet will land - could land - if we are not careful and stand up for what was believed to be principles of truth, logic, and human feelings, or in short what we used to think defined us humans. Big Brother - Donald Trump. Shattering!
