Suzuki M-37C Alto Melodion with Case

Nicely weighted, great sound.

Just received this today. I have a Hohner Instructor 32 that I hadn't played for a number of years because the handle broke. I fixed that last week but wanted a 37 key instrument. The M-37 was less than the current price of the Instructor 32, and it seems like a better instrument to me. The first thing I did was a side-by-side comparison. The Suzuki is a bit louder and brighter than the Hohner. The tone is clearer with less breath noise. I have read that it has more of a harmonica sound, but I would say it has a sound closer to an accordian. I mean, all melodicas sound like accordians and/or harmonicas, but this one has more of the accordian sound to me. The Hohner I would say is closer to the slightly fuzzy zound of an old harmonium. It's a little heavier, which makes it feel better made, I guess, but some people might prefer the lighter instrument.

I've had a Hohner 32 key for about 35 years that I used on occasion as a portable keyboard to scratch out some music or as a sub for an accordion sound when it was needed in some shows I did. A recent gig I did had me wanting an upgrade and this one is great. The width of the keys is the same but the white keys are longer than the Hohner which works well with my long fingers. It also projects much better and I could easily get away without using a mic in smaller settings. It is way more robust in terms of build quality than my Hohner and I look forward to the next opportunity to use it performing. Great case that came with it too.

Recently, I decided to delve into the world of melodicas and bought the Suzuki 37-key model after reading various reviews. Here's my take on it based on my experience and insights from others: Positive Points: The melodica emits a sweet sound that many feel justifies its price point over cheaper versions. Brands like Vangoa and Eastar offer good alternatives for beginners, but the Suzuki provides a noticeable improvement in sound quality. The tuning is commendable and it has an especially good tone. A minor point to note is that some notes might require slightly more airflow, but it doesn't majorly affect the playing experience. Many users loved its portability, making it a go-to instrument for outdoor excursions. Its compact size is perfect for on-the-go creativity, and it comes with a beautiful case, which is an added bonus. I noticed that the instrument has a certain resonance, with some likening it to a harmonica, while others find its sound closer to an accordion. Its sound is mellow, not too harsh, and it has a good dynamic range. Critiques: A few users, found some issues with specific keys. At times, certain keys don’t produce sound or even bend the adjacent key. I haven't run into this defect yet with mine. While many, including me, praise the melodica's sound, there have been observations that the instrument is slightly sharp in tuning. This can be an issue, especially when trying to play alongside other instruments. Some users felt the absence of English instructions was a drawback. Moreover, there was no guidance provided on how to adjust or replace the reeds. General Observations: The build quality is consistently praised, giving the instrument a professional feel rather than it being perceived as a mere toy. The inclusion of extra mouthpieces and a breathing tube are useful additions. Some users made minor adjustments to their melodica to suit their playing preferences, but overall, the feedback leans towards the positive side. In conclusion, while my melodica experience has been predominantly positive, potential buyers should be aware of the occasional tuning issue. However, given its price point and quality, I believe it offers good value for money.

I’ve bought 4 melodicas for myself and grandkids. This Suzuki is great, well tuned, good sound, responsive, easy to play. (I play piano so that helped) The case is excellent too! I liked this one a lot so I decided to try the Pro model. The Pro Suzuki does have a slightly better sound to my ear but was significantly more expensive. I think both new and experienced melodica players will be happy with the M37C. It’s a far better instrument than some cheaper ones I bought. I like the case better than what came with the Pro model!

Recently I have been trying to learn how to write and produce music. I'm 28 and played trumpet through high school and now casually play piano as an adult. I enjoy finding ideas and inspiration from nature and wanted to find an instrument I could easily lug around for camping and hiking trips. This is just about PERFECT. The melodica allows for quick access to melody and harmony. Some of the other instruments I considered (flute, ocarina, recorder) would have taken more effort to learn (given I know my way around a keyboard already) and also generally can't access harmony/chords. I chose this over the Yamaha P37D because it was marked down over 50% and seemed like a steal. I didn't do much research. I'm considering also acquiring the Yamaha because of the hard case. The hard case would make for better/safer packing while traveling or backpacking and I wish I could find a different case for this instrument rather than buying another one but no luck in initial searches. Only criticism I have is that some of the notes in the upper register are a bit airy. Instrument arrived w/ most notes tuned sharp but I have read that is likely intentional, but that said not all of the tuning was even. This is only notable when playing in accompaniment w/ piano. But I'm hooked on melodica now and am taking it with in a few days for a camping trip where I hope to write a melody or two :)

I'm loving this thing! Wow, such great fun. The tuning isn't perfect for you perfect pitch folks, but the instrument has a really good sound overall. Nice quality feel, and the gig bag is gorgeous. It is also nice to have a few mouthpiece choices. I prefer the trumpet style. I have really enjoyed the music that can be produced with this instrument. Great dynamic contrast and articulation. I play clarinet and piano and this instrument incorporates both skill sets beautifully. I would highly recommend this instrument. It is hard to find a satisfying instrument for under $100. It is wonderful for everything from jazz to Irish jigs and will surely keep you coming back to play. (This has certainly been the case for me). I just took it to Florida on vacation and it was such a treat! The portability is great. It went right in my suitcase (standard size, fits in the overhead bin). If you are looking for a satisfying, portable music maker, this is for you. It is versatile and has great potential. I haven't had the opportunity to play with a group, but I think this instrument would probably hold its own. I hope this helps! My research was fairly extensive before I landed on this model, and for me it is just what I was looking for. Writing this review has me wanting to play :). Cheers!

I LOVE this!! The fact that you can pay in instalments is GREAT. Also, it sounds so clean and beautiful! And speaking of clean, it's so easy to clean. Its instructions are clear and I love how you get multiple mouthpieces. And the extra notes really help! This is a lovely purchase and has quickly become become treasured instrument. Don't get a cheap one - invest in this wonderful thing!

Supuestamente este modelo es para estudiantes del instrumento, pero acaba que es*mucho* mejor que modelos supuestamente profesional de la conocida marca alemana - y no es que los modelos de la marca alemana sean malos, es que este es MUY bueno, la calidad de los materiales, la afinación, por supuesto, la calidad del sonido y el volumen, la casi ausencia de ruido del teclado, la embocadura tipo trombone que evita salivar excesivamente y permite más articulaciones, hasta el estuche todo es de primera calidad - todos estos aspectos cumplen un nivel profesional, así que nunca volveré a "melódicas" y me quedaré con los melodions, y si necesito comprar otro seguire con la misma marca, o con este modelo o con modelos más avanzados. Merece 6 estrellas, no cinco. La mejor relación calidad/precio que encontré en melódicas/melodions desde casi treinta años.
