Suzuki M-37C Alto Melodion with Case

I've had a Hohner 32 key for about 35 years that I used on occasion as a portable keyboard to scratch out some music or as a sub for an accordion sound when it was needed in some shows I did. A recent gig I did had me wanting an upgrade and this one is great. The width of the keys is the same but the white keys are longer than the Hohner which works well with my long fingers. It also projects much better and I could easily get away without using a mic in smaller settings. It is way more robust in terms of build quality than my Hohner and I look forward to the next opportunity to use it performing. Great case that came with it too.

I'm loving this thing! Wow, such great fun. The tuning isn't perfect for you perfect pitch folks, but the instrument has a really good sound overall. Nice quality feel, and the gig bag is gorgeous. It is also nice to have a few mouthpiece choices. I prefer the trumpet style. I have really enjoyed the music that can be produced with this instrument. Great dynamic contrast and articulation. I play clarinet and piano and this instrument incorporates both skill sets beautifully. I would highly recommend this instrument. It is hard to find a satisfying instrument for under $100. It is wonderful for everything from jazz to Irish jigs and will surely keep you coming back to play. (This has certainly been the case for me). I just took it to Florida on vacation and it was such a treat! The portability is great. It went right in my suitcase (standard size, fits in the overhead bin). If you are looking for a satisfying, portable music maker, this is for you. It is versatile and has great potential. I haven't had the opportunity to play with a group, but I think this instrument would probably hold its own. I hope this helps! My research was fairly extensive before I landed on this model, and for me it is just what I was looking for. Writing this review has me wanting to play :). Cheers!

The service and shipping from JAPAN IMPORT SHOP ★ RISE was excellent--received the melodica in just under 2 weeks (without priority shipping). The instrument was packaged well and is high quality. The keys are a little more narrower than I thought but shouldn't prove a problem. I am a pianist so know basic keyboard techniques. However, I am hesitant to play this instrument like a keyboard. A look at online videos, such as on YouTube, show a variety of ways the instrument is held and played. Some hold the melodica horizontal like a keyboard, even setting it on a hard surface like a table and use the long tube. Some hold it flat and look down the keys while they play. For me, I like the idea of holding it like a wind instrument (which it is) on it's side, sort of like a trumpet (a trumpet style mouthpiece is included). This does make playing less like a keyboard (and so more challenging for a pianist) but is more fun to play and looks cool! This is my first melodica but believe the price, the sound, and build quality make it a great choice. It's generally easy to play but like most instruments will require time to play well. Be patient (I'm telling myself this also) and I'm sure enough practice will pay off with a lot of fun and a sense of accomplishment.

Cons - the sound is nasal, not bright, with no shine to it. More like concertina. A bit heavy, because it has metal case. Pros - tuning is great out of the box, reeds' setting is excellent! Contributes to evenness of sound. Easy to play. The lowest two reeds are a little dumped, but it's not that bad. The highest reeds' play very well. Mechanism is smooth, condensation valve is clever and works flawless. Metal case, although heavy, is very sturdy.

Recently I have been trying to learn how to write and produce music. I'm 28 and played trumpet through high school and now casually play piano as an adult. I enjoy finding ideas and inspiration from nature and wanted to find an instrument I could easily lug around for camping and hiking trips. This is just about PERFECT. The melodica allows for quick access to melody and harmony. Some of the other instruments I considered (flute, ocarina, recorder) would have taken more effort to learn (given I know my way around a keyboard already) and also generally can't access harmony/chords. I chose this over the Yamaha P37D because it was marked down over 50% and seemed like a steal. I didn't do much research. I'm considering also acquiring the Yamaha because of the hard case. The hard case would make for better/safer packing while traveling or backpacking and I wish I could find a different case for this instrument rather than buying another one but no luck in initial searches. Only criticism I have is that some of the notes in the upper register are a bit airy. Instrument arrived w/ most notes tuned sharp but I have read that is likely intentional, but that said not all of the tuning was even. This is only notable when playing in accompaniment w/ piano. But I'm hooked on melodica now and am taking it with in a few days for a camping trip where I hope to write a melody or two :)

Wow! I had seen other reviews, but had to find out for myself. I had an off brand melodica for many years and decided to get the Suzuki. It came today. First impressions: it's HEAVIER than I thought...very well designed and engineered. I then threw on the standard mouthpiece (NOT the trumpet-like mouthpiece, but the other one) and played it. GORGEOUS! Very smooth, keys feel great, tone is excellent. Seems plenty loud! Hooked up the plastic hose and its mouthpiece is really cool because you can hold it between front teeth. CANNOT WAIT TO RECORD WITH THIS THING! What inspired all of this was the album: "El Embalao Vol. 2" by Adrian Schinoff. This dude SLAYS on the melodica. He makes it sound so good that I figured I would upgrade from the off-brand to a legitimate brand like Suzuki. I am EXTREMELY pleased with this purchase. Comes in a nice sturdy case.

I LOVE this!! The fact that you can pay in instalments is GREAT. Also, it sounds so clean and beautiful! And speaking of clean, it's so easy to clean. Its instructions are clear and I love how you get multiple mouthpieces. And the extra notes really help! This is a lovely purchase and has quickly become become treasured instrument. Don't get a cheap one - invest in this wonderful thing!

Supuestamente este modelo es para estudiantes del instrumento, pero acaba que es*mucho* mejor que modelos supuestamente profesional de la conocida marca alemana - y no es que los modelos de la marca alemana sean malos, es que este es MUY bueno, la calidad de los materiales, la afinación, por supuesto, la calidad del sonido y el volumen, la casi ausencia de ruido del teclado, la embocadura tipo trombone que evita salivar excesivamente y permite más articulaciones, hasta el estuche todo es de primera calidad - todos estos aspectos cumplen un nivel profesional, así que nunca volveré a "melódicas" y me quedaré con los melodions, y si necesito comprar otro seguire con la misma marca, o con este modelo o con modelos más avanzados. Merece 6 estrellas, no cinco. La mejor relación calidad/precio que encontré en melódicas/melodions desde casi treinta años.
