This Chanter has kept me interested and enjoying every minute of learning to play it. The Chanter it self is beutiful. It is quite enough to practice without annoying the others. The book is basic and easy to follow. And I think the sound is soothing ( the reason I want to learn the bagpipes). I never learned to read music and this kit has taught me what I need to know. I am having alot of fun with it.With that being said I feel like I can clear up the wide range of high and low ratings. If you are someone that has been playing music and know what to listen for. Or if your someone who thinks that they can pick up the chanter and be fairly good at it from the get go. Then this kit is probably not for you. I feel this kit is for someone who was ben thinking about playing the bagpipes and would like to give it a shot before investing in the much pricier options. For under $40, I will not feel bad if I play it for awhile, decide I dont like it then pass it off. I feel like a lot of the bad reviews are coming from people who have been involved with music for awhile and are buying it for what it is not. It is not a Chanter that the best pipers in the world will be picking up and playing. It is for a beginner with little to no musical training.So in short I recomend it to a beginner with no musical background, or to someone who wants to try it before becoming commited to it. My kit sounds great, plays great and the kit is easy to follow. Thats all I could ask for because I dont know any better. The ear is something that develops over time, and if I reach that level then I will most likely buy a nicer Chanter.

3 stars for it's looks. I wasn't expecting a great instrument, just something functional. I play and make many instruments and know what something should sound like. This came in a soft package and the reed is in a soft pack on protected. It is split and cracked making it useless. The sound I get will bring a moose to my back door. Since so many negative reviews are about this reed, one would think it would be addressed for shipping. I'll place it with my collection for the time being and fine a descent reed for it, as I never seen the seller comment to anyone about replacing them. I hope if you can get one without a damaged reed you will be able to enjoy it. When I get it to play it I'll update the sound it puts out.

I bought this as a gift, so it's hard for me to rate it. I was impressed by the appearance of the chanter, it's a lot prettier than the picture shows. The metal bezels appear to be engraved. I like that it came with a book and CD, and the shipping was fast. That being said, the reed that came with it did not work. I later purchased the assortment sold by Ethnic sounds  Bagpipes - Assortment of 6 Premium Practice Chanter Reeds  so that my friend could try some different reeds and (hopefully) find one that he likes. If you order this chanter, I highly recommend that you get some extra reeds with it.

i bought this practice chanter without reading the reviews of others buyers. the next they of the purchase i started to read negative feedback about this product for that reason i was a little scared about loosing my money and my time. but today it arrive and it is simply amazing. the only modification that was nessesary to do was to change the cord that seals the parts like the chanter and the reed and put more thant they put so it will make a great seal on it. despite that (because it is easy to correct) it is a very good product and i copare the sound and quality with a mccallum chanter that i have and for the price it deserve the money. also the details are brutal hahhaha.

I have played the recorder for years, with good results, but never before a bagpipe chanter. The finger holes on this chanter are spaced far apart, especially the right hand little finger. It is impossible to play comfortably. Also, the mouthpiece is so long, that it puts your hands far too low near your abdomen. I don't know if other chanters are better, but I hesitate to even try another.On the positive side.....this chanter looks pretty nice, and will look good sitting on a shelf. (unused)

I'm fairly new to learning to how to play the bagpipes this practice chanter isn't as nice as my friends however it's just fine for my Clumsy practice sessions. It is quite pretty and it feels nice in my hands, it doesn't feel cheap and the sound is acceptable. I think for someone who's trying to ascertain whether or not this is something they want to invest more money in this kit is a good jumping-off point.

I was surprised it was not bad at all! The tutorial book is excellent. Did not like the reed but played quite well when changed the reed. overall great deal!bought to give to my son to see if he will enjoy learning before investing in more expensive chanter.

Great way to learn the basics before commiting to the pipes financialy

This Rosewood Practice chanter is a nice looking instrument. It has a decent sound once you find the blowing sweet spot. The note holes are very low profile and I personally find land marking my right 3rd finger and little finger challenging. The note holes should be better defined. A good chanter otherwise. The Learn to Play book features crude black and white instruction photos and the layout is not inspiring. The Cd features the teacher counting and clapping and moving right along(boring).
