Swingline factory was originally located in Astoria, Queens, New York City.It was moved to Mexico in late 80's and later all production was moved to ChinaThis is a very reliable machine and it is not surprising that you may still find US made units in use after 30 years of closing of US factory.

Q: Can this open all the way (180 degrees) to staple things into walls easily?

Yes. There is a lever on the bottom that when pressed will allow the stapler two swing open at 180 degrees. It works great for walls or bulletin boards so far as the project calls for this size of staple.
