I purchased this soldering iron for a fourth-grade robotics project, and it did exactly what I needed it to do. To be clear, the students did not use the soldering iron themselves. Safety comes first, especially with elementary school students. But as their teacher, I used it to help them assemble their circuit boards and bring their robotics work to life. In that sense, this tool became part of something much bigger than a simple classroom project. It helped students see that science is not just something written in a textbook. It can spark, connect, move, and respond. The soldering iron heated properly, handled the work well, and served its purpose without making the process more complicated than it needed to be. For a classroom STEM project, that matters. When you are guiding young students through robotics, you need tools that are reliable, practical, and not fussy. I would absolutely purchase it again. It helped me help my students build, learn, and believe a little more in what their own hands and minds could create.

I bought this as a replacement for a Weller 60 watt with adjustable base (analog knob and no temperature reading) I have been putting up with for a few years now. I bought the old soldering iron from a big box store and was immediately disappointed with it because the detachable iron is indeed 60 watts, but the base is only 40!. It took literal minutes to get hot enough to melt leaded solder and would lose heat the moment you touched it to wire or a PCB. I would have to run it hot because of the constant fluctuation in temp and it was just awful to use. I finally gave up on it this weekend when I struggled for what felt like ages to get a simple through hole capacitor out, and by the time I got the solder heated evenly enough to wick enough off the legs to remove it the capacitor was super hot. I then absolutely couldn't get solder to flow well enough to clear the hole. I trashed it and this thing had NO PROBLEM clearing that hole today. This thing really does only take a couple seconds to heat up. I set it to 310c and added some unleaded to the solder hole and bam wicked the hole clear. Resoldering the capacitor and wire leads back on was no problem. Gets hot fast and stays hot without any problem when applying to a pcp. Tried soldering some thicker braided copper wires together and it had no problem staying to temp that way either. I only planned to test a little and ended up working for a good 45 minutes or more turning it on and off here and there, but did have it on for at least 15 minutes constantly once that I took note of. The handle never got hot, at least not where you should be holding it. If you get your fingertips on the plastic on the other side of the padded area (the lip area, not the plastic you can unscrew) its a bit uncomfortable, but not concerning and not as bad as the Weller was. It does cool off pretty fast after you turn it off, too. You have no idea how nice this is to keep an iron at a steady temp that doesn't have to instantly scorch flux to stay hot enough to transfer heat while soldering. If this thing lasts a year I'll be totally happy at this price. Quick update. I have had this for over 2 years now, and it's still working great. I have found one little nit pick, which is when I switched to a more standard soldering stand that has the tip angled more steeply downward it prevents the auto standby from activating. This kinda sucks because it puts more stress on the heating element and tips when I need to do something else like prep work between soldering, or switching between the iron and hot air and moving back to the iron. It also allows that handle to heat up more than I experienced in the beginning where before it was always nice and cool since it would go into standby when not being used for a short time, but now that it just sits there hot all the time unless switched off the handle can get pretty uncomfortable when doing a larger project like full recapping a retro console. I would still absolutely recommend this, but it seems you need a more horizontal stand for the standby to work or be really intentional with the power switch to get the best experience, which I try to do but don't always succeed.

I’m very happy with this soldering kit. The 80W power provides plenty of heat, and the LCD display makes it easy to adjust and monitor the temperature. It heats up quickly and is comfortable to use for small electronics repairs and DIY projects. The kit also includes useful accessories, so it’s a great value for the price. This soldering iron kit is great. It had everything I needed to make a "microscopic repair" on a nearly $2,000, 12-volt, three-pendant rail light fixture. It turned out that the prior owners had inserted Halogen bulbs in the pendants instead of the correct Zenon bulbs. Because Halogen bulb pins are smaller in diameter and closer together than Zenon bulb pins, the connections between the bulbs and the sockets were arcing and carbonizing, which overheated the fixture's transformer causing it to shut down. The transformer would reset after it cooled down, but the damaged sockets needed to be replaced and replacement pendants were no longer available. I bought new sockets, but I needed to attach the existing wiring in each fixture to the wiring in each new socket. Unfortunately, the space available to make that connection was about the size of a 1/4-size thimble. I tried, unsuccessfully, to use my older soldering iron to make the repair, but it was a disaster and I wound up destroying three out of six of the sockets I had purchased. Nevertheless, thanks to the assortment of very fine tips that come with this new soldering kit, the extremely quick heat-up of the iron, and the included solder and flux, I was able to successfully replace the sockets and our light fixture now looks great and works perfectly. My old soldering iron went straight into the garbage can. This kit is a true bargain and with one use, saved me over 100 times its modest cost with just a single repair. I highly recommend this kit. I also recommend that you purchase soldering "helping hands" if you don't already have them. Amazon sells them at a modest price.

This soldering iron works very well. It has a very easy temperature adjustment and heats up quickly. It's way better than my old one. Highly recommend.

Everything seems to work fine, and you can set the temperature precisely. But the tips will not last! They seem to be very cheaply made and get destroyed easily, on simple projects.
