Apples for Jam: A Colorful Cookbook

A deliciously wonderful cookbook!
I love this cookbook. Not only does it have good recipes but it is a delight to read. The pictures and prose added to the recipes make this more than just a cookbook. I love looking through it on gloomy days.Although the recipes are favorites from childhood, I'd say this book is more a family cookbook as the dishes are the kind kids and parents would like. As an American, some are dishes I'm not familiar with but there are plenty of dishes using ingredients I have on hand most of the time... not to mention it will be fun to try new recipes.I do agree with those who complain about the light gray color of the type used with the recipes. It could have been even one or two shades darker to make reading easier. That doesn't stop me from highly recommending the book.

A fun cookbook.
Love this cook book as a display piece. Great reading. My only complaint is that much of the print is done in pale colors and is difficult to read. I would still buy it again.

A for Effort, C overall
This book tries hard to enchant. Physically, it is lovely, featuring beautiful photographs. Unfortunately, it is all downhill from there. The author's memories range from the banal (finding food the kids dropped to the floor to feed the dog) to the disturbing (being dressed in a bizarre aprony dress after wetting her pants and forced to eat in the cafeteria where everyone new what the weird outfit signified). The recipes could best be described as vaguely European comfort food. Unfortunately, while the ones I tried are okay, none of them are great. For instance, the mac and cheese is better than the blue box but not nearly as tasty as Martha Stewart's. The honey cake is acceptable but can't hold a candle to Marcy Goldman's. The author has a number of homemade ice creams but none of them justify the investment of time and money, particularly when Ben & Jerry's, Hagen Dazs and cold stone creamery are easily superior. I did not find that one go to recipe and frankly, am unlikely to repeat any of the ones I did try. Factor in the confusing organization (by color) and eye tiring light gray print and this offering quickly loses its allure.I do agree that food and childhood memories are not only linked but serve to preserve important traditions. Cooking with children is rewarding for both the kids and the adults. In a world full of fast and "franken"food, it is important to educate children. Nothing beats the taste of a fresh strawberry or a tomato right off the vine. Many kids don't enjoy fresh squeezed orange juice after years of drinking sugar laden concentrates. Cooking and baking from scratch is not all that time consuming and contribute to the health of the children and strengthen the family bonds. Unfortunately, this book is too absorbed in being cute than in blazing that trail. So enjoy the photos and skip the recipes.

most enticing cookbook for you and best gift for girl friends
i've had this cookbook for 4 months now and have already cooked more recipes from it than any other i own. the photography completely draws you in to a lifestyle where quality, simplicity, beauty and imperfection are the driving forces to cook and bake delicious food. some of kiros' writing is very flowery and hokey, but it doesn't effect the overall appeal of the book. i've given this book to female friends as gifts and it has equally drawn them in as well. who knew cauliflower could be this delicious! fried custard squares? yes please!

Mothers of young children will benefit most from this cook book
A beautifully photographed, illustrated and laid out book, but recipes are simplistic. I no longer have young children in my house, but I still remember those hurried, jam-packed days. I wish I had this book back then. I can see myself sitting down with it when I had a moment to spare. It would have been calming to browse through and it would have given me ideas for quick meals.I'm beyond that now, so this book will be passed down to the next worthy young mother that I happen to meet.I had higher hopes when I pictured a "colorful cookbook". The concept is NOT well carried through in this book. It almost seems that many of the recipes were forced into color categories.I purchased this book after purchasing Falling Cloudberries: A World of Family Recipes . That was a much better book...I'm disappointed with how shallow this one is.

Jim from Canada
'Apples for Jam' is a very different cookery book. There are many interesting little stories about how the author came to have the recipe and why she included it in the book. The recipes are great for all ages but especially for children. The recipes are made with healthy ingredients and attractive in appearance. If you want something different in your recipe book library this is the book for you.

why?
I just received this beautiful book and have read some of the essays, which are wonderful. The recipes look interesting and very different than the usual assoertment you would find in other cookbooks. WHY, though, would they use a very light print for the text??? I admit I am getting older and the old eyes aren't what they used to be but this is ridiculously faint printing throughout the whole, large book. Also, they used a funky little font for the page numbers and, not only are they small, but it's actually hard to determine some of them -- I wish they hadn't ruined this book :-(
