I found one of these in my building, have connected, from some previous installation. Can someone explain to me in layman's terms what it is?

These PoE Injectors are very useful for three reasons: (1) If you don't have a Layer 2/3 switch that has a PoE capability, this will allow you to provide power to a PoE-enabled device so that it can be used. Without it, a PoE-enabled device would need a separate power supply that you would need to provide. (2) If you need to place a PoE device in a location where there is no power outlet available, you could place this PoE Injector in a location up to 300-feet away where there is a power outlet available, and then you can run a CAT-5/6 cable to the location where you want the device to be. (3) Finally, these PoE Injectors come in handy when you just want to work on a PoE-enable device in a stand-alone environment where you won't have to connect it to a PoE-enabled switch. For example, there were times when I wanted to configure my PoE-enabled Wireless Access Point (WAP) on my desk before I connected it to my network. Hope this helps.
