Does this work on the bathroom sink

Why does it say the shank is 1/2? It came as a 3/4" diameter!

It is considered pipe thread size so it would be 1/2" ID

Can this be used as a drain cover?

Thank you for contacting Danco. We do not recommend this sink hole cover to be used as a drain cover.

Does the top portion come off if I just need the inside tube?

Thank you for interest in Danco products and for you inquiry. The Danco 10688 Universal Sink Hole Cover, 1-3/4 Inch, Oil Rubbed Bronze has threaded shaft that is molded to the top of the cover. The top portion is not removable as a result.
