survive?? you can survive with no food for a long time. my checking account was seized by a hospital for unpaid bills ( and yes i had insurance but they only paid some of the surgery cost) immediately after I had pawned everything i owned and written checks to pay bills resulting in my becoming homeless and going with no food, none, nada, zilch for 28 days. i survived. lost 30 pounds but survived. However if you dont want to be on starvation rations, i would say 19 days at a 1000 calories a day. There's 19,660 calories in the bucket. But at that, you're still going to be hungry and losing weight if you are at all active. You really need around 2000 calories a day so you can be healthy for 9 or 10 days with this bucket. Remember auschwitz prisoners were rationed 800 calories a day but worked and starved to death. Remember water. You dont have to boil the water for this food but it would taste better. Since my homeless, starving days i have built my own house out in the woods but have been trapped by weather for two weeks each time twice. One thing i learned was variety and comfort food is important so take that into account.

Yes, shelf life is 20-25 years depending on the product. Once an individual mylar bag is opened, you have a year to use, as long as you keep it sealed somehow.

How can the shipping weight be 40 lbs when the pail says 7lbs 5oz for this one and 8lbs for the lunch dinner pail?

I Just weighed the the bucket in its original shipping packaging (just a perfect size box) and it came to 10.2 lbs altogether. The 7lbs 5 oz is probably just the total of the food pouches. With the plastic container, it came to 10lbs even. So no Idea where the 40lbs is coming from. Probably a way to try to justify the enormous shipping expense. Hope this helps.
