Q: Would the putty dry out if you wash it?

No it's water proof but don't get on fabric - it doesn't come off and it can stain. I would not get this for anyone under about 9 or 10 years old unsupervised, and certainly not for babies.

Q: How is it different from regular, cheap putty?

Each of the four strengths, which go from extra soft, soft, medium, and firm, Come in its own color and container. The silicone seems very pliable, and as long as it’s kept in its container after use, should not dry out. It’s nice that there are the four different strengths, so as your hand gets stronger you can move on to the next one. At first I had tried regular play dough, but it seemed to dry out too quickly, so I went with this instead, and I’m really glad I did it.
