The expansion range of the base clamp is 0.4 -1.5", so a desk surface's thickness has to be within this range in order to fit this product. Please check out product photo# 5 for details regarding this information

iPad can be rotated in whatever direction works best for you. We use all directions since guest and employees use it simultaneously

Will the clamp hold on a vertical surface instead of horizontal like the examples and pics show?

The holder expansion range is 4.5-7.5 inches, so the bracket holder clamps onto the side which has measurement within this range. Since the holder rotates 360 degree, it basically doesn't matter whether the holder clamps vertically or horizontally because the holder swivels and make your iPad easily switch between portrait or landscape viewing.
