Just exactly how do you put this together with no ink pad for the ink?

The pad will adhere to the block after you "cut" it with the Mint. To ink it you will use silhouette ink bottles and it will absorb into the pad. There are a few YouTube videos on how to use it if you need further assistance.:-)

Do you have to use the Mint base or can you use other bases?

Sorry for the slow response. You really need to use the Mint base because the stamp is not like a cling stamp that can be attached to a clear block. Each stamp comes with a stamp mount and lid. The initail kits for the various size stamps have a interchangeable base called a stamp grip which you can slide off the stamps you have created and use on other Mint stamps of a similar size. You create a stamp, attach it to mount, cover it with a lid, attach a label to the lid and connect it to a stamp grip to use. I hope this makes sense.

Can you use the stamps to stamp other materials besides paper. such as fabric, wood, stone, etc,?

Any thing you can stamp with a regular stamp you can stamp.

I liked the size of this stamp. The only problem that I had was not really with the stamp itself, but the size of the stamp. When you use the stamp, you need to press it very hard in all places or you do not get the fill stamp on your item. If you do not get a complete stamp, that project is ruined. You cannot restamp it.
