No ability to lock radius - inaccurate product description - very accurate under a light hand.
'Style: CompactSize: 480mmInfinitely variable radius setting through convenient button mechanismPrecision adjustment through central spindleBoth legs with jointWithextension bar'The above text is the seller's description of this compass. Infinitely variable radius = a bit more than 180°, meaning the compass can be completely opened so that the legs are in a 'splits' position, and they even separate a bit further - but anything beyond about 130° isn't really useable in making circles because the needle-pivot is almost laying down on the paper instead of stuck into it.There is no 'convenient button mechanism', at all - there are no buttons whatsoever on the compass. The connection point of the legs hidden under the plastic oval logo is a geared mechanism, moving one leg causes the other to move - the gearing is very smooth and likely very robust by the feel of it. I've never had a geared compass before, so time will tell.Neither leg has a joint. Unless both legs are 'joined' at the geared connection I was just writing about. The extension bar - it seems like it can only function when the legs are open very wide, and there is a joint in that, near the working end, to accommodate the marking instrument hitting the paper at a useful angle.Back to the geared leg joint. Beyond a certain extension, the gearing does not seem to be tight enough to hold the radius I set. I think there should be some way to lock the radius once it's set, and maybe it's just me, but I can't find a way to lock it.Despite what I consider to be errors in the product description - the compass so far has made an extremely accurate 'seed of life', with all circles being precisely the same size and precisely aligned with each other and as a whole, a task that my German Alvin-branded compass seemed to have problems with for whatever reason.Given the errors in the description, the irreplaceable needle, and the inability to lock the compass to any radius, I'm at something of a loss on what rating to give it - so I'll try to be fair and drop a star right in the middle.
