We bought this to try and stop our cat jumping over the gate in our back yard. Unfortunately they are completely useless, our cat just simply climbed the gate as normal and stood right on top of the spikes as if they weren't even there!

After installing these on my balcony handrail, the birds are no more near my balcony. Highly recommended!
