Q: It seems as though the lower edge is not mounted, and would not return a ball hit low and to the middle. Is there a way to secure the lower edge?

You don't want to spike it down in a goalbox for several reasons. 1- It would tear up the goalbox which is frowned upon. 2- If you are on turf it won't work. 3- Spikes can get lost and a well-struck ball near the spike would ultimately rip it out of the ground which would be less than ideal to reset all the time. the chain in the bottom weights enough to limit sway in the wind and drops missed shots that hit the black portion of the net. We have used ours for two years and its still functioning. this might be the best soccer training product ever.

Q: Is the material like a tent kind of mesh?

No, it is not a tent material, it is a heavy mesh net with holes for wind and the ability to be used in the rain and other elements. We train keepers and have turned up the ball machine to 90 MPH and shot on this thing and it has never had an issue. I don't know what the other answer is about mentioning the velcro piece came off, there is literally zero velcro on this item.

Q: does it come with it's own storage bag?

Yes, it does. A very nice, sturdy bag.
