Why are these over twice the price they are anywhere else (williams sonoma, world market etc.?)

Amazon vendors are taking advantage of the lack of filter stock that usually happens after the holidays. It's price gouging. Order filters directly from the Chemex website, they are in stock for $9. Chemex is a great family owned American company, support them directly, not Amazon sharks. The vendors answer that their ludicrous price is due to "Amazons fees" is ridiculous... $24 bucks in "fees"??? Oh please...

Why do you list the retail as $12 when the retail is $8.50 at the Chemex web site?

What's the difference between square and circle filters?

Just the shape so far as I can tell. I use the square ones because usually they are cheaper, I like the three thicknesses of folded paper up against the pour spout which helps prevent a vacuum from forming, and the points sticking out make the filter easier to remove than the circular one. But these are minor differences. Either one works just as well as far as making the coffee.
