Does it have auto power off?

Yes, it has an auto off. My last Taylor lasted for years on a single battery because of this feature.

IS THIS THERMOMETER GOOD FOR CANDY

It should work for candy as long as you're not planning on leaving the thermometer in the oven or leaning against the side of a hot pot on the stove. The housing is plastic so it will melt if it gets too hot. I'm not really sure how candy is cooked so I can't say for sure. This thermometer is designed for quick temperature checks during preparation. I use it to check the internal temp. of grilled and broiled meats mainly.

Great thermometer, use it constantly

So far, love it. Clear read - quick to start climbing to the temp. Used for only meats and pies at this point. Will need to test in baked goods. I appreciate yhe protective plastic storage sleeve too - helps me not stab myself when I reach in the drawer.
