Engaging and thought provoking
Initially, it took me a while to get into it.... or rather Yvon Chouinard started out slow, and in a kind of hokey way, by telling his 'story'..... but then when it finally got into the history of the clothing company Patagonia, and the changes they made to get more and more sustainable and involved in environmental causes I was riveted. (and his 'hokey' personal story tied in well with his business philosophy.. in order to know where you are going you must know where you came from) In the early 1990's they asked themselves some tough questions about how they do business and why. I found it was very insightful, and you can tell this was done slowly with incremental change, and gradual results. I run a small business, but I know I make an environmental impact. There is a movement towards change, and I felt a little relieved to read I don't have to do it all at once. Besides the focus on the environment, his focus on less and better function in his business and clothing products was worth the read. I also love the focus on the people who work at Patagonia, and some of the trendsetting child care programs they put in place. As well as their philosophy of allowing their workers to sneak out to catch a wave, or meet their kids at the school bus. For me it was a very engaging and thought provoking book, and I think it had some of the answers I was looking for.
