Monster Book of Manga: Boys

I love this book! The artwork is absolutely beautiful, and each male character is shown in stages, from the simple skeleton sketch up to the finished product. Useful shorts of writing accompany each image, however, I wouldn't say that this book is best for beginners. I've got alot of books on drawing manga and have been drawing it for years, and this is a welcome addition to my bookshelf :) However, if you're just starting out, I recommend you have the basic knowledge of drawing manga before buying this book. If you do, and are interested in the many different types of male characters in manga, then this is a must have book!

If nothing else, this book is a nice collection to look at. The references are a little more, what I would say advanced, it's not the basics of the basics but it's still a nice addition to any collection.

I've seen a lot of people whining about this series of books saying that it is hard to follow and in some cases people have said that it is more of an exhibition than a tutorial book. This isn't the case. The Monster Book of Manga is brilliant for improving your artwork before writing manga or comics which you intend to submit. It DOES however require some knowledge of drawing and manga. The book takes you through 8 stages of a variety of drawings taking you from building the base shape right to lighting, shading and those little finishing touches. The book is 383 pages long and is packed with different drawings for you to adapt. It makes a great addition to the original book in the series which unfortunately, does not have a specific section for male characters. I've not had this book long, but have already found it very rewarding! Note: This is most definitely NOT for beginners!!!

I've been drawing manga for several years and I was really excited about this book and when I opened it the pages are spread without step by step how to draw there is one pose for each character it is mainly about the ink colouring rather than the drawing. I felt it was padded out with things and I am so disappointed there isn't any 'proper' manga in it including more Bishonen which is one of the best things to draw. It doesn't go into facial detail or different poses or different styles of boy it goes into the boy on the cover, loads of big muscle men, a cowboy etc it isn't anything like you would see in common manga stories, I guess young boys might like it who are all into action man and such but as an actual artist I would say DO NOT waste your money!!

Ogni libro ha una specifica tematica e si suddivide in capitoli relativi a vari soggetti legati al tema portante. Sono tutti libri di ~380 pagine, ma i soggetti rappresentati sono all’incirca una sessantina per libro. Ogni soggetto viene rappresentato nelle diverse fasi del processo creativo: si parte dallo scheletro semplificato, per passare ai volumi, allo schizzo, alla rifinitura, ai toni di grigio con luci e ombre, fino ad arrivare al colore e talvolta agli effetti speciali. Di questi 5 volumi in mio possesso posso garantirvi che molte illustrazioni sapranno catturare la vostra attenzione (non tutte, alcune sembrano realizzate con minore impegno rispetto ad altre), avrete molti spunti creativi e le varie fasi della creazione sapranno aiutarvi o spronarvi a migliorare. Lo stile è molto simile a quello degli anime o alla classica colorazione di illustrazioni manga. E’ una colorazione ridotta all’essenziale (perlopiù con semplici definizioni di ombre e luci e colori piatti sovrapposti)… per diventare veramente esperti, dovrete rivolgervi altrove. Il più delle volte, il lavoro sul disegno è sicuramente migliore del colore. Sia chiaro, non è un libro per chi è già abbastanza esperto, che potrebbe trovarne l'utilità solo per avere qualche spunto creativo, ma, per tutti quelli che si stanno avvicinando al disegno, sarà un’ottima base da cui partire. Una volta capito il concetto, non è un libro su cui tornerete spesso. A mio parere, il migliore della serie è l’ultimo: “The Monster Book of MORE Manga” - Drawing like the Experts. Divertitevi! ;-)

It took me quite awhile to start getting through the Monster Manga Book of Boys. There are so many different styles of them and, ultimately, they can be quite difficult to draw if you aren't already experienced. I wouldn't recommend this book for beginners. Start off with the beginners' book and then work your way up. Trust me, the extra effort is worth it if you want a great drawing sitting on your sketchbook or computer screen! For the price, you get a massive book and loads of information and inspiration. There are so many genres and line-by-line detailing that it makes drawing them out so much easier. It also gave me quite a bit of insight on the anime-male anatomy that can only be given through display. Did I mention that there were many, many boys? Because there are. And they're fabulous! This book is amazing.

I love this book! The art is amazing and very profecional. This book is great for inspiration and for evryone who likes or is a fan of manga. BUT if you are a beginner and want this book to teach you how to draw then don't buy it. This book gives you step-by-step instryctions but they are kinda hard to follow and the coloring is definatly hard to do. I would recomend it, because the art is good and if you like manga you probably would enjoy it!

The Monster Book of Manga; Boys came with its sister book The Monster Book of Manga; Girls which I have already reviewed but this book is doing all the same for pushing my skills as its sister. I did notice that it was just a bit smaller then the Girls book showing who draws more of what and I would have to agree, haha. None the less it is still an over the top detailed example book for anyone looking for that missing flavor in their artwork. Again it's a great deal for great quality.

A good book for Inspiration ONLY will not teach you how to draw. Recommended for the more advanced artists who need new challenges and character ideas, or want to get familiar with different genres of manga, as this book does a great job of explaining them. ;) I LOVED it !!!!
