Reading the MSDS sheet for the oil and it is Canola Oil. So most likely won't kill a pet but you should keep it away from them. http://sites.fellowes.com/Fellowes/Materials/Documents/MSDS_35250.pdf

My shredder gets light usage - how do I know when to oil?

I have a nice Royal paper shredder that crosscuts 16 papers at once. It advises against the use of oil. I don't think oil is need in the cutters themselves. I think they are just selling cheap oil to make money. Why use canola oil of all things?

This oil seems to leave gum-like residues. I read that it contains plain canola oil. Would olive oil or soybean oil be a better vegetable oil choice?

i'm not sure if the jar you got is defective possibly... I haven't had any gum like residue at all from my fellows shredder oil... In fact I like it very much... I wouldn't put any other type of oil in because it may compromise the machine
