Q: can this be used for arms?

Absolutely it can be used for arms that's why I bought mine. They use those for arms in cardiac rehab

Q: Can this be used under a desk? I dont want my knees hitting the desk.

If you have a standard height desk, your knees will probably hit unless you 1) raise the desk; and 2) remove the middle drawer.

Q: Does it have to be assembled?

A little bit. But they give you the tools and instructions to do it. It's quite simple to assemble.It's basically the 4 bolts for the feet and the two pedals. Just plug the digital reader into the cable on the machine.

Q: I hadn't noticed the word "magnetic" in the title until the order arrived? What's that all about?

Magnetic resistance will give you a quiet pedal.
