Surprisingly good 'USB monitor'
I had been toying with the idea of getting a 'USB Monitor' for quite a while and had something with the specs of this monitor in mind, so when I saw this one going for a good discount on the recent 'second Prime Day' I took the plunge.I'm glad to say that it largely lives up to my hopes. The screen is usefully large, decently bright, has pleasing colour reproduction, good viewing angle and it is quite well constructed. It also has some useful features like a micro USB-OTG port allowing you to directly attach USB peripherals via a suitable adaptor or hub, that can be accessed by devices connected via the USB input. Plus a full sized HDMI port (as well as 2x USB-C which both could potentially be USB video) which is very handy in that you don't need to source a micro-HDMI cable like many other competitors. And as a strange but welcome bonus, it has VESA 75 screw sockets on the back meaning that you can use a standard monitor mount/arm should you decide to use it as part of a more permanent setup.Another useful feature is that if you power it (using one of the 2x USB-C ports) it will supply power through the other. If you have a device with a 'full service' USB connected then that single cable will not only send video to the monitor, the monitor will send power to the device and will let you access whatever is connected to the USB-OTG connection too. A very convenient setup. The instructions didn't say but it looks like the power output is something like 15W max.Other positive things to note are a useful protective case which can double as a stand. This works quite well both for screen protection in transit and to allow you to prop it up, with a couple of possible angles. And the thicker 'bottom bezel' is also not branded with any logos, giving the unit a pleasing professional look. And a nice touch is that it includes a number of useful, short cables - full service USB-C <> USB-C, full size HDMI<>HMDI and a USB-A to USB-C. This should cover video and data connections, as well as power. Some so-so aspects of note are the built in speakers. These are ... functional. Nothing special, but I guess handy to have. There is a headphone output so you could hook up better speakers that way. Also, the built in controls are a bit fiddly to use, being 5 small buttons on the left hand side. They are marked, but only at the back of the monitor, so it can take some time to learn to navigate around the built in menus and you will be pressing the wrong button a lot at the start. I saw that some other peers have a jog dial which seems to be a better way to navigate menus. Also so-so is the overall 'feel' of the construction. On the one hand, it is pretty solidly built with an aluminium case that is well machined - no rough edges or anything like that. On the other, it's quite bulky and seemingly uneccessarily thick giving it a sligtly 'empty' feel for the size it occupies and its weight. It certainly doesn't have the really nice compactness and heft of something like say, an iPad or Samsung tablet. But for the price I think it's certainly acceptable overall. So what's it like to use? In my experience very good. I first tried it with a Steamdeck and when I connected it via the supplied USB-C cable it worked immediately, with the Steamdeck interface popping up on the monitor (and internal screen powering off). It looked great. I did get a warning that I was getting 'slow charging' from the monitor but hey, that's common to nearly all compact external monitor solutions which can't give the Steamdeck the 45W that it would like to see. Overall it was great to play games on the decent sized 15.6" screen and the quality was more than acceptable. Plus, the USB-OTG port worked perfectly and I was able to connect a wireless joypad with a 2.4GHz dongle for gaming. Also worth noting is that the Steamdeck itself can power the screen (if you don't feed it USB power from another source). It was a bit dimmer but still very usable. That may run the battery down faster than it would if using the internal screen of course. Then I tried my Samsung S5e tablet. It also worked great - I could either have a duplicate of the regular tablet screen or, more usefully, run Samsungs DEX interface. This is a desktop operating environment that lets you use the tablet with its Android apps in a PC-like windowed desktop environment. Again, the USB-OTG port was recognised so I was able to connect a logitech universal dongle for keyboard and mouse making it a simple laptop PC alternative.Same went for my S10e phone using USB-C connection - you could mirror the screen or run DEX as per the tablet, meaning your phone could essentially be a simple laptop. Finally, to test the HDMI connection I plugged in my Chromecast with Google TV. I powered the monitor via a USB charger into one of the USB-C ports and was able to use the other USB-C port to send power to the Chromecast. This made for a pretty self contained solution. It worked really well and essentially functioned as a portable Smart TV. Very impressive. I did measure power consumption and the entire setup was only using 7-8W running streaming video, meaning it would be a great travel unit and last a long time off of an external USB battery pack or you could even use a 12V socket common in vehicles with suitable adaptor.Final conclusions. All in all I am very impressed with the screen, particularly at the price I got it at in the sale. At the regular price it is towards the higher end of the price scale for ~15" USB screens but it does have a lot of good points to justify it, as I laid out above. It doesn't have touch but I wasn't too worried about that. Also, it's 1080p and not 4K but again, for the things I want to use it for absolutely not an issue and arguably, 4K on such a small screen is total overkill with 1080p being a much more suitable resolution. This is a great option for a small/portable screen that runs off USB power. I'm giving it four stars at the normal price point but would give it a full five stars at the cheaper sale price .. so keep an eye out for sales/Prime Day/Black Friday etc.
