Will this one work on a 4200 dymo? I can't seem to find 1/2" nylon for a 4200.

If you look up on Dymo's website you'll see that you're looking for the 18488 for 4200 industrial to get a 1/2" nylon. This description lists this item as a Dymo 18488. So my best guess is yes.

can i write on it instead of using a printer? what do i use to write on it?

The Dymo labels are made with thermal paper and you can not write on this brand.
