You can use clear fishing line, or you can go to a hobby shop and buy some jewelry beading stringing wire. Either of those would probably be stronger than just string and be more secure. The hobby shops also sell metal rings their for various projects, and wooden ones as well (like plain key rings, or rings of various sizes for macrame, etc.)

Q: will the color come off when it is hanging in the rain?

It does not as it is just crystal not coated the cut is where the colors come from. I do have the coated kind which I keep inside.
