Do I need a subwoofer with these big towers?

I'd describe the 8" down firing speakers as woofers, not subwoofers. For music, you will likely not feel you need a sub, unless you're into a genre such as (C)rap. For movies, I still like to augment the bass with my two 12" subs (and couch mounted bass kickers :-D ).

No. Have to make bass/treble adjustments with receiver or amplifier whichever you use. These are wonderful speakers.
