do i need the fcc license for this set, , also my son lives 3 1/2 miles from me, will this radio set work me to him

No fcc license needed on FRS radios. Most FRS radios have a line of sight signal. Trees, buildings houses exc. Will stop the signal from sending. If your willing to set up a 2 meter base antenna. You can talk to your son. But depending on conditions. FRS 2 watt signal will only travel a mile or so. More if your lucky.

What is the battery life in standby and use?

Really depends on how much radio use and distance - I’ve gotten 8 hours with moderate usage - AA batteries will last way longer - they use both

How far is the range?

Good if line of sight, average otherwise.

What is the power output?

FRS radios have a max TX power of 2 watts on channels 1 -7, and 15-22. On channels 8-15 it’s a max of 0.5 watts. For the higher power channels there are two PTT buttons, the low TX is at 0.5 watts and the High TX is at ~2Watts. Typically range in dense urban environments is about 1 mile, out on the trail I have communication that has reached 4 miles.
