Would you recommend strong grip for smart vinyl as the standard isn't picking anything up and I'm having to do each letter individually by hand

Hi Yes strong grip is good but sometimes it is too good and you can have a job releasing the vinyl, heat it a little by rubbing your hand over it sometimes works.

Does it work with holographic vinyl?

It will work at picking it up but I found with 2 types of holographic vinyl it was hard to peel off the tape after transfer the tape was stickier than the vinyl. Works better with glitter and textured vinyl
