You can paint on all fabric which is natural fibres. Yes you can paint on calico and or any cotton. You can use fabric paint, watercolour or acrylic, although acrylic dries hard and makes is more difficult to put a needle through. I use fabric paint. Hope that helps.

Q: Would this be suitable for making a sleepover tent for a child's bedroom

Yes for sure. Wash it first though as it does shrink. It is quite a rustic, crinkly fabric so worth bearing in mind depending on the look you are aiming for.
