Both. The shafts are coated with tiny industrial (real) diamonds. They are the abrasive. 120 to 150 mesh. Just like sand paper but with the hardness of diamonds. They they are coated in titanium to help preserve the durability. The diamonds are attached using an adhesive, which, over time will be worn down. The titanium layer protects and makes the adhesive more durable. I hope that helps your understanding.
