So, if the wi-fi is out or wonky, the only access is through one single key?

No the Wi-Fi is only needed so you can unlock your door through your phone if you don’t have Wi-Fi you can still use your fingerprint because his battery powered or use your Key

Why does lock become unresponsive and show no lights at times, even after née batteries?

I’ve never had that issue. Make sure firmware is up to date. If that’s not the issue maybe the unit is bad. Call customer support.

Then can this be installed on a 3/8 thick piece of tempered glass? With another 3/8 thick piece of glass as the strike and jam.

No. Required door thickness is 1.75" to 2.00" The fitment of the bolt and mechanism is the same as a conventional deadbolt.

If you bought two of these locks can you configure them to have the same key for the traditional lock?

I have not done it however you can configure it to match any Kwikset key.
