A Formidable Scent….stings the nostrils.
Not for the faint of heart. It is a very pungent The scent that lingers in the bathroom forever. I watched the entirety of Breaking Bad and came back a week later and still smelled of the remnants of last nights camp fire. It’s absolutely fantastic. It’s seems to have a much higher concentration of pine tar than any other pine tar soaps…including Grandpa’s. It smells like if someone sealed a driveway in the middle of the forest.

I'll tell you what it actually smells like...
Ok, first off, this soap is great. It lathers fantastically and cleans all the places. I even use it on my hair and I think it works better than liquid shampoo. The smell is unique. I don't usually do reviews, but this is needed. I don't think anyone actually captures the way this soap smells properly and, really, that's the most important thing about it. Most reviews say it smells smoky. That's true, but far from the whole truth. It's not a simple smell and I think it's best described by a story. Imagine you're camping with the guys. Or gals, I suppose, though the scenario I'm about to lay out is probably less common in that situation. You've stayed up late hanging out around the fire. The only thing around is pine so you've been chucking one quick burning log after another onto the fire for about 8 hours. After burning through the dry stuff and putting back several beers and a couple whiskeys you grab a few un-split, wet logs and huck them on there. They don't burn well but by this time you don't really care. You go to bed smelling like pine smoke. This soap doesn't smell like that. Imagine waking up the next morning (or really just the same morning) to a sun that is too early and too bright. The birds are chirping, which is nice, but a bit too loud. You get out of bed smelling like stale smoke, unsure if you're just overly tired or a bit hung over. You stumble over to what's left of the fire. It's the green logs you threw on last night just smoldering away still. You start stoking it and throw a few more sticks in there so that you can make some much needed coffee. As the fire starts to smoke more and then finally some flames lick the bottom of your pot you start pouring water in to get it boiling. You unsteadily slip and dump most of the water on your little fire, putting it out. A gust of hot steam, smoldering pine smoke and old ash hits you in the face. THAT is the smell. Really it's not a bad smell. It just brings up the wrong camping memories. I'm still going to use the soap. It's great. I'll just need to get used to the smell. My wife isn't a big fan of the smell, which is unfortunate because it's pungent, stays with you all day, and perpetually permeates the bathroom.

Classic, Clean & Surprisingly Great for the Outdoors
Packer’s Pine Tar Soap absolutely lives up to its reputation. The scent is bold and earthy — that classic pine tar smell that feels clean and refreshing without being overpowering. It has a rugged, traditional vibe that’s perfect for anyone who prefers a more natural, woodsy fragrance over overly sweet body washes. The lather is rich and satisfying, and the bar feels solid and long-lasting. It leaves skin feeling clean without that tight, overly dry feeling. One unexpected bonus is that the strong pine tar scent actually seems to help keep bugs away, which is a huge plus if you spend time outdoors, camping, or working outside. After showering with this, I’ve noticed fewer mosquitoes hovering around. If you’re looking for a dependable, no-frills men’s soap with a timeless scent and an added outdoor benefit, this one is a winner. Definitely buying again!

Excellent for Skin Conditions
I've used this for years, and I have yet to find a soap that works as well for eczema. ...and it does so while still providing moisture to the skin (which a lot of eczema soaps fail to do). I love the scent. It's piney/smokey and reminds me a bit of a campfire. With exercise, the fragrance really comes out to keep you smelling fresher. Fantastic bar, all around. Bonus #1: The scent helps repel mosquitos and other biting insects. I love the outdoors, and this is a really positive benefit that is often not advertised. It's not as effective as using a bug repellent with DEET, but for a natural soap that is really good for your skin, this is great. No harsh chemicals needed to get some relief from insect bites. Bonus #2: It eliminates body odor better than any other soap I've tried. By this, I mean that the "natural smell" of a human is masked very well. This makes it fantastic for hunting or photography where your scent might otherwise spook animals if the wind isn't in your favor. It's not a complete mask of scent, but I've been in many situations where I've thought that the wind change would give away my position and was very surprised to see that the animals didn't spook. Just a small perk up, and back to grazing. Another really great benefit that isn't advertised.

Disgusting smell.
Disgusting smell. I've used MANY Pine Tar scents. This does NOT smell like Pine Tar whatsoever. It always has a fresh pine smell with a smoky background. This smells like a campfire with asphalt being laid down right next to it. It's gross

it doesn't smell that bad...
I don't understand the copious mentions of an exceedingly bad scent?! if I remember correctly, Grandpa's has an even more potent smell... I really like this soap!! (feel like this is one of the best purchases I've made on Amazon!) fragrance is definetely camphorous -- and, to me, invigorating!! (contains pine leaf oil.) but it cleans so wonderfully!! you feel a thorough clean without getting that tight feeling... you get out well cleansed and moisturized at the same time!! I really like this soap; will try using on scalp [hair... whether you have plenty (me) or not, the goal's to clear the scalp using the hair & wash it in that process...]. would like to continue this subscription!! thank you very much!!

Great soap, dislike the smell
The soap quality itself is fantastic. It lathers well, leaves my skin very smooth and hydrated, and rinses off nicely. However, when I told myself I wanted a woodsy smell, this isn’t quite what I imagined. Thankfully the smell doesn’t really stick to my skin after showering, but while in the shower and even when just being in the bathroom it smells more like road tar or burning rubber. It is a VERY strong smell and honestly makes me a little bit nauseous. I’m sad to say I won’t be using it anymore because like I said the quality is great, but after trying it a few times I just can’t take the smell.

very good product
very good product. Cleans without drying. It cleans face and body equally and does not cause itchiness. I don't mind the smell, it does not linger on the skin.
