The human body makes 5-HTP, which is the precursor of serotonin, from L-tryptophan, an amino acid. To facilitate the chemistry to produce more serotonin. I find one 100 mg capsule of 5-HTP at bedtime is sufficient. A second capsule of 500 mg L-tryptophan at bedtime assures there is readily available raw material for the production of more serotonin throughout the next day. Also, there is a tryptophan to NAD+ pathway that energizes cells while you sleep and is life extending (low NAD+ is directly and critically related to the aging process). In addition, L-tryptophan stimulates sleep (turkey has high levels of tryptophan in it and most people have been snoozed by Holiday turkey) and is also the raw material for a natural hallucinogen that brings on pleasant dreams. Bottom line, 100 mg 5-HTP, 500 mg L-tryptophan and 10 mg slow release melatonin results in very restful sleep, often with dreaming, and a pleasant "life is good" personality throughout the following day. All of this is available, without side effects or drowsiness in the morning, for a lot less than any sleeping pill with positive, life extending effects. Melatonin, in combination with undisturbed sleep, is also responsible for several routine repairs and maintenance in the body of things like esophageal and stomach irritation, CNS repairs, and DNA repairs. It doesn't matter that much if the melatonin is slow release. A capsule or pill works fine (I've used both). Melatonin stay with you through part of the waking day. If you are young, you may need only 5 mg or even none. If 60 or over, you will probably find 5 mg to 10 mg helpful. Some Seniors even go as high as 15 mg. Melatonin is a natural hormone produced by the pineal gland, but its production diminishes with age. The three way bedtime combination I have used for over three years. I'm 69 and I sleep like a baby which gives me higher energy all day long. Tryptophan can be expensive. The Nutricost source is the best I've found and they use a capsule with L-tryptophan powder in it. Another bedtime combination for the elderly is SAMe and sub-lingual Methylcobalamin (B12). Seniors have failing methylation systems as well as B12 absorption issues which brings on dementia. lethargy and fatigue: epidemic problems among the very old.

its a precursor to the neurotransmitter serotonnin. 5-Hydroxytryptophan (5-HTP) is the intermediate metabolite of the essential amino acid L-tryptophan (LT) in the biosynthesis of serotonin.
Serotonnin is not only present in your brain, but also in your gut, it helps your digestive system communicate with your brain via the Vagus nerve.  If your brain and stomach get out of synch you will suffer a host of ills and problems. This may help alleviate those problems.

Per the back of the label, it contains 5-Hydroxytryptophan (100mg). Other ingredients are veggie capsule and rice flour. There's nothing indicating the source of the 5-Hydroxytryptophan on the label or on the website. Your best bet may be to email the manufacturer and find out what the source material is for the amino acid. No guarantee that marketing and/or customer relations will be privy to what the chemists do. Good luck!
