I absolutely love this book! I use it in my personal Bible study and have taken it to my Life Group Bible Study on Sunday nights. The maps and overlays are such excellent tools to have. This book is worth every penny. You will not be disappointed.

The maps of the biblical lands as well as overlays allow you to see geographically where things are in a modern setting.

This is very readable and fascinating history. I love how it's set up starting with the Patriarchs and ending with New Test. characters following the history of the Bible. I've been reading this like a regular book, starting with the beginning. The maps are so helpful and the text really helps clarify what was going on in the culture at that time period, and really helped me with understanding the Scripture even more! This is one of those few rare gems of a book that I treasure and highly recommend to all students of Scripture. I love the maps and the photos! If you're looking for a good Bible atlas, I can't imagine you'd be disappointed with this one.

Okay, when this book arrived I nearly sent it back. Thought I'd ordered the wrong book as I expected lots of maps. Then I started reading and got totally hooked. Do NOT try to read the book. Treat it as reference or study material. It is excellent with lots of details and references to passages in the bible. So a page of reading will take you forever if you want to check every reference but it's worth the time and trouble. I'm studying the Old Testament from a historical rather than a religious point of view. Why did people go where they did; how did it develop from there; where did they go next and when - the list goes on and on. Dr. Wright starts the book with The Landed Context of the Biblical Story, covering Topography, Climate and Available resources - a real eye opener and a must for a serious student of the Old Testament. My only criticism is that I would've liked more maps with overlays of where those ancient towns are today. I realize that would've made the book too bulky and thus have ordered more maps. As it is I find myself continuously searching in another map where the town is I'm reading about. The chapter headings themselves challenge you to read : for example: Deborah and Jael - A Sweet Song of Victory; Samson - Greatness run Amuck; David and Solomon - Our Legacy; Rizpah - When Not-So-Little-things Really Matter...... And so much more. Obviously I did not return the book. And I highly recommend this for anyone that is curious about the Old Testament. However, I reiterate, it's work, not play.

I like the maps and map overlays very much, but don't at all like the writing style of the Biblical background and culture part. It comes across as audacious, though I doubt the author meant that; he likely thought it would be more engaging for people to read, and likely it does appeal to certain personality types. Before I realized that, I'd bought one for a family member and he felt the same way. I just saw the version without the background and culture part, so I plan to get rid of this one and get the maps only one instead.

5 Stars for an excellent book with maps and comments and history! A must have for any Bible Study Group and/or persons who wish to understand ^eretz Yisrael: "the land and people of Israel" better. Todah Rabah Thank you very much, Michael A.

There are many fictional inserts in the text. The chapter "Mary and Joseph" is objectionable; for it clearly shows disbelief in Mary's perpetual Virginity. Her Virginity has been believed in for all the Christian centuries, and is defined by the Church as an Article of Faith.
