Babaji's Kriya Yoga: Deepening Your Practice

an up-to-date and improved practice manual
Kriya Hatha Yoga is a very enjoyable style to practice for those seeking a combination of physical activity and yoga spirituality. Yogis and yoginis who have followed along the DVD from this style, which I also recommend, might already know this and have the eighteen-posture routine memorized. A practice manual should be accessible to yogis who have an aversion to DVD-led practice, meaning the manual is their only resource. It should also be worth going back to again and again as the practice becomes more advanced. This manual definitely meets the requirements of approachability and rereading value. The accompanying DVD I recommend, of the choice of two Kriya Hatha Yoga DVDs, is Babaji's Kriya Hatha Yoga Self-realization through Action with Awareness .Kriya Hatha Yoga is a much fuller-body set of exercises than the Yogoda exercises taught by Paramahansa Yogananda and his followers. It is not a "no-pain-no-gain" workout routine. Under the right conditions, yoga can lead to pratyahara and experiences of other "limbs" of yoga. Kriya Hatha Yoga definitely does. The possibility of Self-realization through just these practices is once again asserted. I say "once again" because one of the chapters is a revamp (without being a rehash) of the introductory lecture on the instructional DVD.The basic 18 postures are covered here, with modifications, variations, and contraindications spelled out. There are photos as well as drawings of the poses. Most of the poses call for movement phases within the pose. The routine can be thought of as 9 pairs of posture and counter-posture, actually, which makes it easier to memorize.I might have preferred a spiral-bound edition. I hope a Kriya Hatha Yoga CD and/or small poster comes out, too. I am not aware of any products that familiarize us with poses beyond the 18 that are of this style per se.

Babaji Kriya Yoga - Deepening Your Practice
As a Yoga practitioner of many years and an integrative Psychoanalyst I am often asked to recommend a Yoga book. This is a book I like to suggest for several reasons. Firstly it is based on an authentic classical tradition. In a time where Yoga studios are popping up everywhere, it is reassuring to find a set of comprehensive instructions that are time proven, authentic and based on an ancient tradition. Secondly, as in the ancient times where Yoga was understood as a comprehensive system for self -transformation, this book stresses an integral approach. It focuses not only on the asanas (postures) but also addresses sadhana (discipline), pranayama (breath), dhyana (meditation) and bhakti (love and truth). Lastly, the yoga asana instructions and book format are clear, thorough and easy to follow. The asanas presented are gentile yet deep acting, suitable for a wide age range. Throughout the book, correlations are presented between the postures and their physical, emotional and psychological positive impact; information that is informative as well as useful.

Babajis Kriya Yoga, a good starting place.
Babaji's Kriya Yoga - Deepening your Practice. This is an excellent introduction to the philosophy of Babajis Kriya Yoga and a good companion to any Babaji's Kriya Yoga student or for the general yoga student. It details the 18 postures, an integral part of Babajis Kriya Yoga sadhana, spiritual discipline with illustrations, photos with detailed explanations of how to perform the poses complete with precautions and benefits in a readable style. This volume is graced with a handsome cover, the numerous illustrations and photos assist in the explanations of how to perform the postures. What distinguishes this book from a previous edition entitled "Babajis Kriya Hatha Yoga, 18 postures of relaxation and rejuvenation" is that that explains how hatha practice fits into ones overall sadhana practice.More than any other book, this book encapsulates what Babaji's Kriya Yoga is and how to get started.A. Two Stars
Rather disappointing. A bit superficial in my reckoning. It is more of a practical guide than a spiritual exposition.
