My favorite supplement brand
This is a great supplement to take as most adults are low in magnesium. I love that Solgar uses a dark, glass bottle vs plastic. We all get enough exposure to microplastics as it is. Solgar always produces a high quality supplement, and this magnesium doesn’t disappoint. Helps me fall & stay asleep much better than without it.

OXIDE IS BETTER? “Magnesium Oxide” vs.” Magnesium Citrate”
OXIDE IS BETTER? “Magnesium Oxide” vs.” Magnesium Citrate” VERY INTERESTING! “Randomized Controlled Trial” studies are the gold standard of proving or disproving what a drug or supplement can do. According to the studies “magnesium oxide” is more beneficial, and “magnesium citrate” shows superior bioavailability. Magnes Res. 2012 Mar 1;25(1):28-39. doi: 10.1684/mrh.2012.0305. Comparison of magnesium status using X-ray dispersion analysis following magnesium oxide and magnesium citrate treatment of healthy subjects. Shechter M1, Saad T, Shechter A, Koren-Morag N, Silver BB, Matetzky S. Author information Abstract The magnesium content in food consumed in the Western world is steadily decreasing. Hypomagnesemia is associated with increased incidence of diabetes mellitus, metabolic syndrome, all-cause and coronary artery disease mortality. We investigated the impact of supplemental oral magnesium citrate versus magnesium oxide on intracellular magnesium levels ([Mg2+]i) and platelet function in healthy subjects with no apparent heart disease. In a randomized, prospective, double-blind, crossover study, 41 (20 women) healthy volunteers [mean age 53±8 (range 31-75) years] received either magnesium oxide monohydrate tablets (520 mg/day of elemental magnesium) or magnesium citrate tablets (295.8 mg/day of elemental magnesium) for one month (phase 1), followed by a four-week wash-out period, and then crossover treatment for one month (phase 2). [Mg2+]i was assessed from sublingual cells through x-ray dispersion (normal values 37.9±4.0 mEq/L), serum magnesium levels, platelet aggregation, and quality-of-life questionnaires were assessed before and after each phase. Oral magnesium oxide, rather than magnesium citrate, significantly increased [Mg2+]i (34.4±3 versus 36.3±2 mEq/L, p<0.001 and 34.7±2 versus 35.4±2 mEq/L, p=0.097; respectively), reduced total cholesterol (201±37 versus 186±27 mg/dL, p=0.016 and 187±28 versus 187±25 mg/dL, p=0.978; respectively) and low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol (128±22 versus 120±25 mg/dL, p=0.042 and 120±23 versus 121±22 mg/dL, p=0.622; respectively). Noteworthy is that both treatments significantly reduced epinephrine-induced platelet aggregation (78.9±16% versus 71.7±23%, p=0.013 and 81.3±15% versus 73.3±23%, p=0.036; respectively). Thus, oral magnesium oxide treatment significantly improved [Mg2+]i, total and LDL cholesterol compared with magnesium citrate, while both treatments similarly inhibited platelet aggregation in healthy subjects with no apparent heart disease. PMID: 22433473 [PubMed - indexed for MEDLINE] Magnes Res. 2003 Sep;16(3):183-91. Mg citrate found more bioavailable than other Mg preparations in a randomized, double-blind study. Walker AF1, Marakis G, Christie S, Byng M. Author information Abstract Published data on the bioavailability of various Mg preparations is too fragmented and scanty to inform proper choice of Mg preparation for clinical studies. In this study, the relative bioavailability of three preparations of Mg (amino-acid chelate, citrate and oxide) were compared at a daily dose of 300 mg of elemental Mg in 46 healthy individuals. The study was a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled, parallel intervention, of 60 days duration. Urine, blood and saliva samples were taken at baseline, 24 h after the first Mg supplement was taken ('acute' supplementation) and after 60 days of daily Mg consumption ('chronic' supplementation). Results showed that supplementation of the organic forms of Mg (citrate and amino-acid chelate) showed greater absorption (P = 0.033) at 60 days than MgO, as assessed by the 24-h urinary Mg excretion. Mg citrate led to the greatest mean serum Mg concentration compared with other treatments following both acute (P = 0.026) and chronic (P = 0.006) supplementation. Furthermore, although mean erythrocyte Mg concentration showed no differences among groups, chronic Mg citrate supplementation resulted in the greatest (P = 0.027) mean salivary Mg concentration compared with all other treatments. Mg oxide supplementation resulted in no differences compared to placebo. We conclude that a daily supplementation with Mg citrate shows superior bioavailability after 60 days of treatment when compared with other treatments studied. Interesting medical story
I've been hiking up our New Jersey hills for years and occasionally would complain about it being very hard to breathe. So I went to a Pulmunologist, who diagnosed me with asthma. I was given Advair and allergy medicine, and used them for a number of years, but the problem still remained on my hikes. I recently had an appointment for a stress test and during the test my heart rate spiked to over 220 beats per minute and they halted the test immediately. My Cardiologist said I had SVT (Supraventricular tachycardia) which is a heart condition wherein the electrical system in the valves and nodes become irregular causing the ventricles to continue to fire thereby raising your heart rate. Well, was I surprised, but glad to hear it wasn't life threatening and many people have it and don't know it. I was lucky enough to have it come out during a stress test. There are medications used to treat this or a procedure called ablation where a probe is inserted into your veins and the surgeon tries to find the problem and fix it by burning or scarring some of your heart tissue. Don't think I'd like that done! My cardiologist prescribed three medications, but since I cringed at the thought of taking them for the rest of my life, I did some research and discovered that sometimes Magnesium can abate the problem where it becomes less frequent or not at all. I have used Solgar vitamins and supplements since the 1970's and always found them to be of the highest quality available and they were sold on Amazon with Prime. What could be better? The supplement bottle is still made from glass! Very unusual nowadays. The capsules are a bit large for me to swallow, so I cut them in half. Since I've only been taking these for a week, I will post an update in the future. Highly recommended company.
