What's the difference between a student and a professional architectural scale? The professional obviously costs more.

I believe the difference in cost is due to the professional scale having the markings etched into the scale. A student model simply has the measurement markings painted on to the scale. If you don't subject the scale to constant use buy a student model, it's accurate enough for DIYers.
