Katsuobushi - Dried Shaved Bonito Flakes, 0.88oz

Just trying out Miso soup for the past few months. These flakes are an awesome ingredient. Lots of flavor but not fishy or overwhelming. Very pleased with the individual wrapping too. High quality product!

I have been looking for bonito for a while. Unfortunately, in the town I live, no Japanese shop. Amazon should have been my first thought.Katsuobushi or Okaka is a dried/fermented variety of tuna which enters into the composition of a kind of dashi (dashi is the base of miso soup or noodles for example, but can be prepared with shiitake or kombu for instance, instead of katsuoboshi) and gives an interesting and unique umami flavour to the delicious Japanese bouillon, due to its glutamic acid.Here a link to a recipe if you want to try it, which I strongly recommend:[...]Enjoy!!!

I'm mostly using them for me, the human, as I wanted to add protein to my ramen without too much hassle, but my cat likes an occasional treat, too. I appreciate the individual packets. As I am single, I can open one and the rest will stay sealed and "fresh" (they are dried, so not really "fresh" in the first place) until I need more.

Nothing absolutely special. But that's not a bad thing. It's a good product in the sense that, has good flavor and scent that I know from using Dried Bonito plenty of times.Inexpensive and works (imparts Bonito flavor and umami)! Adds an element of depth to dishes... As it should.

So happy to be able to get Bonito flakes mailed to me as I live far from any Asian market. These individual bags are perfect. Thank you!

Some folks use this to cook or as a topping. My 2 cats love it and I use it once a day when they get hungry between meals. Sorry no photo but trust me they are like two little vacuum cleaners.

The package I got was rather bland in taste, not much fish taste or smoky taste. It did have a nice smell. The flakes are smaller in size than I expected, only a few millimeters in width. The bottom 1/4 or 1/3 of each little packet was also crushed into a fine powder.

I'm experimenting with cooking Japanese food (for health reasons), and I saw this on TV and ordered some to try to make a soup base - it's great to add for flavoring too!! It came quickly and well packaged. I plan on finding more recipes...
