Not too hard, not too soft. I use them all of the time, and I have given many away as gifts. Great for reducing tight glutes, hip flexors, scapula, calf muscles, and foot tension. I have even laid on them and tried to target pec muscles. They will assist in reducing tightness in the long run, but make no mistake, it is going to hurt. You are going to have to lean into it. Fascia is stubborn. Some muscles are just angry. Think of it as self-imposed deep tissue massage. It is not as bad when you use them more often. A great compliment to foam rolling. As a tool, I recommend these balls. Keep them in your gym bag.
