Merriam-Webster's Intermediate Dictionary

Kindle comes with 2 default dictionaries. The NEW Oxford is worthless. It uses the same word you are looking up to describe the word, something anyone in the 8th grade would know is a no-no. So I deleted that one. The regular Oxford is pretty good, but not at good as I wanted. So I downloaded this Intermediate version of MW, and it's a great dictionary. It doesn't even come close to the amount of words described in the Oxford, but what's so neat about it is that if you highlight a word and MW doesn't have it, it AUTOMATICALLY switches over to the Oxford, which almost always will have it. So I highly recommend this dictionary. It puts out definitions that are far more clear than the Oxford. Perfect also for your Jr Hi kid or even HS kid. It's an amazing dictionary.

I got this dictionary for my kids in 4th and 6th grade because I desperately wanted something that would appeal to them and encourage them to use it. My plan worked! It came in attractive hardcover, white sheets with age-appropriate illustrations. They immediately dived into it with curiosity which I was happy with. The prints are not too small so it is easy to read. They use it every time for their ELA school and lesson work. I highly recommend it.

Ok dictionary. But about 30 pages were bound in angled. This makes it so that it is not a smooth flipping through experience. I purchased as a gift for my niece’s birthday. No time to return it. I’m Disappointed, poor quality controls for a book to be sent out like this. UPDATE: my 11 year old niece loved the dictionary! She did notice the misbound pages so she asked if I could exchange it for her, so I did. of course amazon made that process so easy.

I purchased this dictionary for my 3rd grade nephew to use while he was staying with us after his school closed their classrooms and mandated home-schooling. It was only then, that I realized that the small dictionary he was using at school was next to useless. This is a must for children whose parents (or Uncles') who care about their education.

The dictionary is great. Colorful and easy to read. The packaging was not so good. I ordered two hardback dictionaries and they were not secure in the large box. They moved around and hit each other during shipping. Consequently some of the pages were folded in and all messed up in one of the dictionaries.

The book arrived wrapped in cellophane as was BRAND NEW and in perfect condition!! Happy with purchase!

Our elementary school librarian recommended this dictionary as a nice "in between" for my 9- and 11-year olds who are avid readers and always asking me "what does ______ mean?" There have been a few times that they still couldn't find the word (Google to the rescue!) so I'll probably end up getting a more robust dictionary as well, but this one has bridged a gap. Big collegiate dictionaries are overkill at this point. I like to have a paper dictionary on-hand though as an alternative to more screen time when words need to be looked up.

My son was getting frustrated with our massive, grown-up, unabridged dictionary, so I went in search of something more suited to his reading/skill level. The definitions are clear, don't reference obscure, secondary meanings, or use the word being defined to define the word. This has made all the difference with his vocabulary homework and writing. Highly recommended for K-6.

Good dictionary for school work.
