A cheating husband. A secret second family. One impulsive purchase: a crumbling cottage on a South Carolina island. At forty-three, Julie Pike's twenty-one-year marriage ends with a confession she never saw coming. Her husband has a mistress in Boston and a six-month-old son. The dream home is sold. The life she built is gone. So Julie does the one reckless thing she's never done: she buys a beach cottage sight unseen on Seagrove Island, South Carolina. The cottage has holes in the floor. Her heart has worse. Dawson Lancaster is the local contractor hired to fix the house. He's quiet, capable, and carrying grief of his own. He lost his wife and newborn son years ago, and he's been hiding behind hard work and Southern hospitality ever since. Renovating Julie's cottage is just a job. Until it isn't. But rebuilding gets complicated fast. Julie's estranged sister shows up with secrets. Her overbearing mother isn't far behind. And when her ex-husband lands in a hospital begging for another chance, Julie discovers the man who shattered her life still hasn't stopped lying. She came to Seagrove to fix a house. She's going to have to rebuild her whole life instead. Sweet front-porch chemistry. A Lowcountry island that feels like home. Sisters who fight with paint cans and forgive with tears. A happily ever after that's earned, not handed out. Good Summer Beach book
I am currently reading book 6 of the 8-book series. The Beach House was the first book, and it's clearly marked 1st book of a series. So of course I knew there was more than one... (But we will get into that in a minute). The Beach house is light, summer reading. Easy to follow. I love books that are set at beaches, or rivers, etc. I'm a shore person myself, living in 'beach towns' nearly all my life, although not in the South. The characters are ok, not exactly complex, not exactly mysterious. There are no big surprises or twists. Like I said, a perfect beach blanket book- easily read, easy to pick up again if you get sidetracked with something else. My issue: Each of these books is very short. The average length of any good novel I've read (and I've read Hundreds!) is probably about 350-400 pages. Average. Some a little bit shorter, but many longer than that. These books are Short! I noticed a couple of them weren't even 200 pages! The entire book can be read in 90 minutes. Seriously? I can't help but feel taken for a ride that I have to spend $4 per book which is a total of $32 when these 8 books could have EASILY been three 450 page books and cost about $12. I feel kind of ripped off. Even more annoying is the blatant manipulation of ending each book during or *immediately* after the culmination of a big event or problem getting solved. And I mean immediately. The next book literally starts as the characters are walking home or still at the party or event or whatever happened in the last paragraph of the previous book. No weeks have passed, no years, it just picks up exactly in the moment it left off. It seems very manipulative and contrived just to split this story into another book, and then another, and then another... I've never seen that before in a series. I hope this doesn't become a trend with authors to grab as much money as possible for the contents of what should be one or two books telling the same repetitive stories about the same characters. I also noticed a pattern in each book. It all begins with one of the characters being "afraid" of what others will think, so they don't ask or talk about something. The other person is also afraid to know what the other thinks, so he also avoids talking about things and it's a long, Looooooong series of mis-understanding each others actions and motives, when all they had to do was ASK for cripesakes! These are people in their early and mid forties... seriously, they don't know how to communicate with other adults? This is where a third person needs to come into the picture and tell the two lovebirds or siblings, or mother and daughter what to say, how to ask, and find out what the other one really thinks and let them know... It's all so... high school. But I'm now on book 6, so although I have complaints, it's not THAT bad! Good Beach book.

Wow
THE BEACH HOUSE is a standalone read with a happy ever after. There are no sex scenes or colorful language so any age can read and enjoy. It is a love story, a new love but it is more the story of a woman, 43, starting her life over. Married for 21 years, two grown daughters on their own, he almost retired, their big house sold and plans to move to a cottage on the beach and live the rest of their life doing their thing and enjoying their life. He comes in late and then informs her he is moving out. He is in love with someone else and he has been with her for 2 years and they have a son. Her world shatters. She had no idea what was happening. Very quickly he arranges for the sale of the house to happen so they can divide the money and he has started divorce proceedings. She has no idea what hit her but now she is mad. However, after a long pity party she gets her stuff together and uses her half of the house money to buy a cottage on a small island on the S. Carolina coast. She arrives to find a cottage in very bad shape. She can't even spend the night there. She is devastated. What has she done. Her money is running low, the house is a disaster and could things get any worse. She drives down the island to see if she can find a small B&B to spend the night. Luckily she finds a small place. She arranges for a room and a sandwich for the night. Dawson owns the B&B. However the next day he tells her that the B&B has not rented rooms for the last few years. She is shocked. He explains it is just southern hospitality. With her hands in her head she explains her whole miserable problem. He tells her he can help with the cottage. Thus a friendship starts. Day by day she is getting stronger, feeling better, learning to live on her land and being happy. Then her mother shows up with a sister she has had nothing but problems with and winds up dumping her there. That is not the last surprise she will get. The hospital in Boston calls to tell her that her husband (the divorce is not final yet) has had a terrible accident and is in the hospital. As his wife they need her to make medical decisions for him. and then his sweet fiancee leaves him at the hospital with a...I'm sorry I can do this. Oh man this poor lady has bad karma. I loved this story. It was so today and could be someone we all know. It is a story of learning to stand up for herself. Learning to see another side to the story. Growing a backbone and getting on with her life. This is a very good read. I found it to be very entertaining and I definitely recommend it. I was not paid for this review. I am not a writer nor do I know one. I am not kin to this author. I am a reader and this is my opinion, nothing more, nothing less.
