Yes, it will work for this purpose. Our waterproof backing is urine-proof. If washed the order should go away.

Q: How thick is this pad?

Our mat is approximately 0.13" thick. The benefit to our mat is that it is extremely durable and long-lasting material.

I found that the urine pooled underneath the mat, but there a lot of very positive reviews. I don’t know why ours failed. I will say I love the ease of cleaning poop off of it. I can scrub the spot clean during the day until I change it. I usually put it down clean in the morning. I put the disposable pet pads under the whelping mat so the urine didn’t keep sitting on the bottom of the whelping pool. that helps, but was an extra expense I didn’t think I would need with the mat. We have 6 golden retriever puppies that are using it.
